Horses in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 are the best way to get around, but you’ll have to put in a little work to get one. Follow our guide to learn more about horses and some of the ways you can obtain them.
Before going into the methods on finding a horse, there are a few things to keep in mind.
You’re only able to have one horse at a time, with no way to store previous ones. This includes Pebbles, despite Henry's initial attachment to it.
When you do transfer to a horse, everything carries over. This includes what the previous horse was wearing, and everything it was carrying. Keep this in mind if you’re planning on switching to a horse with less carry capacity.
Getting a Horse
After an unfortunate start to your Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 adventure, Henry is left without his horse Pebbles. You have a few options at this point, though they all require a little work first.
How to Get Pebbles Back
You can actually go get Pebbles back as soon as you have access to the open world. If you head southwest from the starting point Troskowitz, you’ll reach Semine. Heading to the horse trader, you’ll discover that Pebbles is there, safe and sound.
There’s a catch though. Groom Ballatay wont just give you the horse straight away. You either have to pass one of two stat checks (Persuasion or Domination), or pay up to 150 Groschen.
The stat checks are relatively low, so if you wear some decent clean clothes to increase your Charisma and improve your Speech, the stat check should be manageable.
As a side note, the Wedding Crashers quest will eventually take you to Semine, where you’ll be required to own a horse for another quest. You don’t have to take Pebbles back, though there is an achievement for doing so.
Stealing Horses
If you go up to any horse, you have the option to mount and steal it. However, while this does let you ride around, the stolen horse isn’t actually considered yours.
To have the horse be registered as your own, you must first take it to a black market trader. In Trosky you can find them at the Nomads’ Camp (head west of Troskowitz.) And in the Kuttenberg region, there’s a black market trader slightly west of Kuttenberg town.
Registering a horse this way costs money, though the cost of your current horse will be deducted from the total. You can also sell horses via this method too, which makes for a decent early game option.
Buying Horses
If you have a little cash to spend, then you can always buy a horse directly. In Trosky, the horse trader is at Semine, while in the Kuttenberg region you can find them in Kuttenberg town, west of Maleshov, and Grund.
Quest Reward
Progressing through the main story in Trosky will eventually lead to the quest Back in the Saddle. This quest gives you a new horse, along with some gear for it.
You’re not required to use this horse, though if you only have Pebbles at this point it’ll be a decent upgrade.
Best Horsemanship Perks
Horsemanship in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is a simple measurement of Henry's riding skill, which increases by riding around or defeating enemies while on horseback.
When it comes to actual gameplay, you’ll very rarely find yourself fighting enemies on horseback. Because of this, you’re better off picking perks that let you ride for longer distances.
Thankfully, most of the lower perks are all tied to either making your horse faster, or reducing stamina consumption. Head Start at Horsemanship 8 will always give you a quick initial burst of speed, while Ride Like the Wind at 10 reduces stamina use. Both of these also have later improved versions.
At Horsemanship 10, there’s a choice between Wildrider or Roadrunner, reducing stamina use off road or on roads respectively. You can only take one, though in practice the choice isn’t too important.
Roadrunner will generally see more use, since many of the open fields or forests are hard to ride quickly in — running into a tree will often cause you to fall off. You can also set your horse to auto follow the current road, which is useful when trying to fill in the map for a new area.
