In this guide, we'll tell you how to open the Galleries Combination Lock in Conscript, where to find the Gas Mask, and where to use the Lockpick in the Fort Souville Basement.
The second chapter of Conscript has you running all over the trenches in your hunt for useful items like the Torch and the Shotgun. The climax of this chapter will send you underneath Fort Souville, but a strange Combination Lock stands in your way. Read on to learn how to solve the Combination Lock in the Fort Souville Basement!
How to Get the Gas Mask in Conscript Chapter 2
You can get the Gas Mask in Conscript Chapter 2 by getting the Souville Key, traveling to the Fort Souville Basement, and running around the underground area clockwise until you get to Depot A. You'll need the Gas Mask in order to open the Galleries Combination Lock in Conscript
You can get the Souville Key by getting the Wire Cutter and opening up the Wire Blockage. The Souville Key will open up a new area to explore, so we're going to need a map for this guide. Here's the map we'll be using:
1. Travel to the Fort Souville Basement
Your first step will be to make your way to the Fort Souville Basement. From the Support Trench, make your way to Communication Trench West and head north to Fort Souville.
Fort Souville Weapons Storage has three doors. The left door takes you through the Courtyard and up to a save point and Stash. The middle door takes you to the Kitchen and some loot. The right door takes you to the Quarter Halls.
Use the Souville Key to open the door to the Kitchen and loot it. Then, go into the Quarter Halls and go down the left-hand tunnel into the Fort Quarters and loot this area. You'll also find a map of Fort Souville which will make navigating the subsequent areas much easier. There may be enemies to fight in this area, so be careful.
North of the Fort Quarters is the Shooting Post. This area has some loot and a hole that will take you down into the Fort Souville basement. Don't drop down just yet; you should run back to the nearest Stash in Command and drop off the loot you've picked up.
You will absolutely encounter German soldiers (including a heavily armored Knight) in the Fort Souville Basement, so you should equip yourself for a fight. The Pump Shotgun is a good choice for a ranged weapon due to the close quarters. You may want to craft some ammo, too.
Finally, you will have a very difficult time without the Torch (a.k.a. the Flashlight). If you haven't gotten it yet, you should go back to the Supply Trench and get the Torch.
When you're ready to go, make your way back to the Shooting Post and jump down the hole.
2. Travel to Depot B
You can encounter German soldiers at any point in the entirety of Fort Souville, so move carefully and keep your eyes open. Head south and turn east and you'll pass by the door with the Galleries Combination Lock. Turn north at the next intersection and you'll enter Depot B.
Depot B will have a Knight and a German soldier with a club in it. You can either evade them or fight them, but be aware that this can be a pretty tough battle since it's in close quarters.
Go around to the eastern door in Depot B and head south.
3. Unlock the Lower Stairwell
There's a path to the west at the end of the tunnel; go inside and you can open up the Lower Stairwell. This will allow you to open up another door and give you a shortcut back to the main floor of Fort Souville. This is a good opportunity to head back to Command and drop off anything you don't absolutely need.
Continue south and you'll be in the Cave Shelter. There are lots of little pieces of loot to find in here. Unfortunately, many of the side paths are blocked, so you'll have to run around the long way.
4. Open the Back Door
While you're passing through, unlock the southernmost door in the Cave Shelter. This is another shortcut that will open up the Back Door in the Supply Trench.
From here, you'll need to go north on the left-hand path and go through a door. Head west, and then turn north toward Depot A.
5. Get the Gas Mask
You'll see a dying German soldier inside Depot A. Push the box out of the way and gas will start to fill the room. You'll need to take the Gas Mask off of him and equip it. Exit Depot A.
How to Open the Galleries Combination Lock in Conscript
You can open the Galleries Combination Lock in Conscript by finding the Gas Mask, visiting all four Casemates to learn the combination, and then opening the Locked Door (Combination Lock) in the Galleries section of the Fort Souville Basement.
We have the Gas Mask already, so now it's time to go to the first Casemate. Here's the map for the next step of our journey:
Moving from Depot A (5 on the above map) where you got the Gas Mask, head south and turn right when you reach the end of the tunnel. Head south into the Cave Shelter and take the second left. You'll have to go through a small path in the wall to get around the debris.
The northwestern door in Cave Shelter leads to the East Works. This area has gas, so equip your Gas Mask before you head in. When you go inside, you can find a small amount of loot in the area.
6. Go to the First Casemate
The northwestern door in East Works leads to a "Casemate" which is an emplacement for artillery. Aside from any loot, we're looking to get two clues: the name of the Casemate and the unique item in it.
For example, here is what I found in Casemate Desire:
In this case, I found the sword in Casemate Desire. Keep in mind, however, that Conscript randomizes some puzzles (such as the first combination lock in Chapter 1), so you may need to explore these areas yourself to find the clues.
Make a note of the Casemate name and the clue, then get ready to move — we have three more Casemates to visit, and that means we'll need another map.
7. Head to West Works for the Other Casemates
We have three more Casemates to visit. They're all in the West Works, so let's get moving. Exit East Works and go back through the Cave Shelter; you can safely take your Gas Mask off once you've left East Works. We're going to head through the northeast door in Cave Shelter. The path is outlined as the red line in the above map.
Once you're through the Cave Shelter, put your Gas Mask back on and go through the door to the northeast off of the side room. West Works has one German soldier equipped with a melee weapon, so be ready to deal with him.
West Works leads to the other three Casemates. You'll need to find the Casemate name and the clue associated with each of them. This is what I found in my playthrough:
- Casemate Anatole: Soldier
- Casemate Berthe: Lion
- Casemate Celestin: Medal
- Casemate Desire: Sword
Again, this is what I found in my game — you may have different results if this puzzle is randomized. Make sure to check for yourself!
When you have all four Casemates, we're going to head to the Locked Door (Combination Lock) in Galleries. Exit West Works, go north toward Depot B, and pass through Depot B. Head south from Depot B's left door and make the first left and you'll be at the door where we'll access the Galleries Combination Lock in Conscript.
8. Unlocking the Galleries Combination Lock in Conscript
Now it's time to actually unlock this door. There's a paper right next to it that will tell you a combination. Here's what mine looked like:
To open the Galleries Combination Lock in Conscript, you need to match the symbol of what you found in each Casemate to its position on the lock using the first letter of each Casemate to find the correct pattern.
My note says "A, B, D, C," so that means that the correct order of the symbols is what I found in Casemate Anatole, Casemate Berthe, Casemate Desire, and finally Casemate Celestin. That means the correct combination is Soldier, Lion, Sword, and Medal.
The Latrine doesn't have much of interest aside from a Lockpick. This is, however, the final item we'll need to complete Chapter 2.
How to Use the Lockpick in the Fort Souville Basement
You'll get the Lockpick after you open the Galleries Combination Lock in Conscript. The Lockpick is used at Depot C in the Fort Souville Basement. It opens up access to a save point and allows you to complete Chapter 2 after one more battle. (This should not be confused with the Lockpick that you find in the Pigeon Coop.)
By now, you should have a pretty good idea of how to move around the Fort Souville Basement. Still, it's easy to get turned around down here, so here's a map showing where you need to go.
Head back through Depot B, the Cave Shelter, and the western hall of Galleries. This will take you to Depot C.
9. Opening the Locked Door in Depot C
Use the Lockpick on the northern door and you'll find yourself in the Combat Shelter — and you're finally no longer alone.
These soldiers aim to retake Fort Souville and you're going to help them. Report to your lieutenant and he'll tell you to get to the front lines.
From here, you'll have to exit Fort Souville and backtrack all the way to the first area of the game. Make sure you're well-equipped for combat as you'll have to kill a lot of German soldiers!
That's the end of our guide on how to open the Galleries Combination Lock in Conscript. You can learn more about the game in our other guides below!
