Tarasque | IS-0059 Reaper

Some of the enemies in Abiotic Factor require a special trick to kill them such as the Leyak. Once you've explored The Mycofields, you'll move on to the Security Sector and encounter a terrifying new enemy that seemingly can't be killed: IS-0059, colloquially known in the game's community as the Reaper. Read on to learn how to fight him and win!

Using an X-Ray Lamp to Get Night Essence from The Reaper in Abiotic Factor
The X-Ray Lamp won't kill the IS-0059 Reaper, but it will get you one piece of Night Essence. Unfortunately, it will also anger the Reaper...

Where to Find the IS-0059 Reaper

You can find the IS-0059 Reaper in the Security Sector. It will first appear as you approach the button covered in a black cloud; after that, it can spawn nearly anywhere within the Security Sector at any time.

IS-0059 will appear from nowhere in a puff of black smoke. It will silently patrol the halls until it encounters you. If it sees you, it will chase after you; if it grabs you, you will be teleported into The Night Realm. If you have upset an IS-0059 Reaper, however, it will attack you with its scythe and cause heavy lacerations.

The Energy Pistol is a low-damage weapon that can nonetheless kill the IS-0059 Reaper in one shot.

How to Kill the IS-0059 Reaper in Abiotic Factor

You can kill the IS-0059 Reaper in Abiotic Factor by using a laser, either by making it walk into the laser beam in the Security Sector or by shooting it with the Energy Pistol. Unfortunately, IS-0059 doesn't stay dead for long — it can and will reappear as quickly as one minute later. There does not appear to be a way to permanently kill the Reaper.

The IS-0059 Reaper drops Night Essence when it is hit with an X-Ray beam; the handheld X-Ray Lamp works best for this. Sneak up on the reaper and shine the X-Ray Lamp on it and it will drop a Night Essence at its feet. There appears to be a cooldown on these drops of somewhere between 1 and 2 minutes, so it will take a lot of time to farm Night Essence in this way.

Hitting the Reaper with an X-Ray Beam, however, will greatly upset it and it will change its behavior — instead of trying to teleport you to the Night Realm, it will instead try to kill you with its scythe.

The Laser Killing the Reaper in Abiotic Factor
You can also bait the Reaper into walking into this laser at the start of the Security Sector; it will instantly kill him all the same.

You can build a network of laser tripwires using the resources you find in the Hydroplant, but the easiest solution is to build an Energy Pistol that can despawn the IS-0059 Reaper in one shot. You'll need a total of 4 Night Essence which you can farm from the Reaper to make it (among other items).

Once you have an X-Ray Lamp and an Energy Pistol, you can blast the Reaper with an X-Ray Lamp and then shoot him with the Energy Pistol before he grabs you. Repeat the process as many times as necessary.

Although you can get Night Essence in this fashion, there is an easier way — go into The Night Realm and fish in the pool of Ink. The fish that you get from there will drop Night Essence when butchered, saving you a ton of time in waiting around for the Reaper's cooldown on dropping Night Essence.
