Unlike in Forza Horizon 4, you won’t be gaining influence to get access to different parts of the festivals. Instead, you begin the game as a seasoned racer who is looking to help expand the festival across all of Mexico. To do this, you will be gathering a new type of point called Accolades while still managing the skill point and experience systems that have been a staple in the Horizon franchise. Here's how to gain Accolades in Forza Horizon 5, as well as the other systems that tie into the game's progression.

The Forza Horizon 5 Progression Systems

There are three point systems that you are going to be hit with when you begin playing Forza Horizon 5:

  • Accolades
  • Skill Points
  • Experience

These all have their different uses and relate to different parts of the game. They can be rather confusing, though, as they often go hand and hand. You won’t usually be earning just one of these point types while riding around, and many activities may even grant all three.

Forza 5 Accolades

Gaining & Using Forza Horizon 5 Accolades

Accolades are the newest point system on the block. This system is the bread and butter of the Forza Horizon 5 campaign and the way you are going to keep unlocking new things to do in the game. Here is a quick rundown of the Accolade system to get you started:

  • The game will give you an Accolade goal at the beginning; hitting it means you can unlock a new area.
  • After unlocking the first area, you can save up accolades to unlock multiple areas or upgrades at once
  • By using Accolades to unlock a new festival location, you will unlock new racing challenges that correspond to the racing type the new festival site is known for.
  • Every time you unlock or upgrade a new area, the game will give you a new accolade total to reach to unlock more.

When you use your Accolades, you will unlock a unique expedition like train racing; completing this expedition will unlock new races around your map. Of course, to do this, you will actually need to start accumulating large amounts of accolades, which can get confusing. Essentially Accolaids are made up of hundreds of in-game achievements. Here are some example tasks for unlocking accolades in Forza Horizon 5:

  • Taking car photos.
  • Winning races.
  • Scoring high in danger zones.
  • Finding new locations
  • Playing against other players online.
  • Buying new player homes.

To see what you can do to unlock Accolades, go to the game’s campaign menu and click on the Accolade section. This will open a menu that shows you what activities you can currently complete to earn Accolades; this will also show you how many Accolades will be given for each activity. You can also check the races on the map to see if you have already earned all the Accolades from the event and, if you haven’t earned them, what you need to do in order to.

  • Quick Tip: Completing certain Accolade tasks will unlock bonuses gifts like cars, horn sounds, and clothing. These can only be claimed by going into the Accolade menu and interacting with the task.

Many times, you will find that you collect Accolades naturally while playing the game. If you are regularly competing in new races and activities, then you shouldn’t have a problem unlocking new content.

Gaining & Using Forza Horizon 5 Experience

There is a classic leveling system in Forza that is akin to how you gain levels in other multiplayer games. The higher your level, the more time you’ve generally spent playing the game and doing well in races. This is displayed to other players, and for every level, you gain a free wheel-spin. Be sure to look for the experience boards scattered around the map to get an easy experience boost.

Forza 5 Skill Chain

Gaining & Using Forza Horizon 5 Skill Points

The final system is skill points; this is the one that you will be seeing pop-up on your screen the most often. Skill points are gained from doing everything from drifting to running into small cacti as your speed through the desert. You can gain points by driving around, tearing through the wilderness, and when you are in the middle of races. Once you earn enough skill points, you will gain a point to use on your car’s skill tree.

  • Quick Tip: Crashing into a surface that brings your car to a stop or rolling over your car will break your skill point chain. This means that you will lose all the points that you had accumulated in that particular chain.

Every car in Forza Horizon 5 has a separate skill tree, and the abilities on the tree will cost you different amounts. For example, unlocking Forzathon points or a wheel-spin will cost far more than just using a point on a skill that can make it a bit easier to earn skill points in that particular car. Some cars will offer better rewards than others like cars, but you should be prepared to spend quite a bit of time grinding.

Boost Your Points with Forza Horizon 5 Skill Songs

To make things easier on yourself, make use of skill songs. Once you buy your first house, skill songs will begin to play at random times. The number of points you earn during the duration of the song will be greatly increased, and the game will alert you if a channel begins playing a skill song so that you won’t miss it.
