Fields of Mistria contains a number of other items to collect, including fish and bugs across different seasons. Like those, some Artifacts also make for great gifts if you're trying to befriend certain characters.

How to Get Artifacts
Most Artifacts appear underneath raised areas of ground, which can be dug up using a pickaxe — you get a Worn Pickaxe from an early quest in the mail, but can also craft better ones via Blacksmithing.
New Artifacts will appear as the "Unidentified Artifact" item, which will then be revealed if you equip it and hold down the use key. You don't need to do this for duplicate copies of Artifacts you've already obtained.
Aquatic Artifacts are an exception to this. To get these you must buy the "Aquatic Antiquities" Fishing Skill. This gives you a chance to obtain Aquatic Artifacts both while fishing and diving.
A number of Archaeology Skills also increase the chances of obtaining higher tier artifacts, so it's worth picking these up as your Archaeology Level increases.
