Brighter Shores Guide | Starter Guide Walkthrough
Now that we've explained the HUD, it's time to get to the meat of this Brighter Shores Guide with our early game walkthrough!
Creating Your Character
As always, we'll start off the game by creating your character. You can choose your physical attributes, some outfit pieces, and the colors of those outfits. Keep in mind that you'll eventually get armor that will cover up most of this stuff.
You'll then have to pick a name for your character. Pick out whatever works best for you and hit "Check Availability." If it's available, you'll be able to hit "Confirm" and you'll immediately enter the world.
Your First Day as a Guard
Speak with Captain Jal DeGreene — it's your first day in the Hopeport Guard. This isn't just a calling — the Guard profession is a measurement of your combat abilities within Hopeport, the zone for Episode 1.
You'll then be prompted to check your quests. You may have multiple quests available, but you'll want to start with the "Main Story" quest to open up the rest of the map; the gates are locked and you can't leave until you complete some basic tasks.
Unlocking the Portal Stone and Learning Magic
Get your sword and speak with the spellcasters; one of them will instruct you to activate the Portal Stone. The Portal Stone is essentially the waypoint for this zone. You'll then learn the Teleport Spell which allows you to return to any Portal Stone as long as you're not in combat.
Use the Teleport spell as instructed and return to Sultar Malzak. He'll then teach you the Sense spell; this will allow you to see objects and characters that you can interact with in your immediate area.
Report back to Corporal Binns — and get ready for a fight.
Defending the Town
An alarm will sound and squads of troops will sally out the gate. You'll be tasked with gathering your squad. You'll have to talk to three people and help get them ready.
- Jermais: Jermais will be immediately ready to fight as soon as you talk to him.
- Toblaine: Toblaine will need gentle persuasion to get ready for the fight.
- Delana: Delana has lost her bow; you can find it behind the light blue bed in the Barracks. Look for the bed with the quiver at its foot.
Give Delana her bow and return to Corporal Binns; he'll open the gates and you can finally head out of the Training Ground. If you want, you can loot the chests in the Barracks for a bit of money, but it's not strictly necessary — you'll be making plenty of cash soon enough.
Your First Fight
The scene on the streets is pure chaos; Goblins are everywhere and everyone is fighting for their lives. You'll see two Goblins with a target symbol on them. Attack one of them and select your sword to begin the fight.
Thankfully, you don't have to worry about healing; you restore to full health once you've won a battle. Combat in Brighter Shores is turn-based, so just be patient and wait for the fight to finish. When one Goblin is dead, move on to the next one with a target symbol on it.
Helping Marcus Mint
Winning your two fights will tell you about the Guard profession and how professions work. Click through the tutorials and speak with Marcus Mint. He needs your help moving a crate of his wares.
Pick up the crate and follow Marcus Mint one zone over to the Town Square. Talk with him again and put his wares on the cart. Delana will then come fetch you and ask you to return to the previous street.
Saving Captain DeGreene
Unfortunately, Captain Jal DeGreene has been injured in battle. Corporal Binns asks you to head into the nearby Apothecary and get Ebsworth to come help.
Head into the Apothecary and speak with Ebsworth. He'll run outside to look at Captain DeGreene. Unfortunately, he's out of potion reagents; it's up to you to go fetch some at the Beach. Don't worry about getting lost or anything; any alternate paths are blocked off and you can always access the map if you need it.
Head South through the Town Square and you'll end up on the Eel Street Bridge. Two Goblins will emerge from the water and you'll have to fight both of them. Beating them will advance your Guard profession to Level 1.
Head south down Eel Street and keep heading south until you hit the Central Waterfront. Then, head west onto the West Waterfront. Once again, you'll have to fight another pair of Goblins. Kill them quickly and your Guard profession will advance to Level 2.
Eventually, you'll be at the East Beach. There are multiple items, fish, and enemies to uncover here; click on them and select "Discover" to permanently add them to your map. These items are:
- Brown Kelp
- Horn Shell
- Mottled Flounder
- Pearlcap Crab
Forage the three pieces of Brown Kelp and you'll gain your first level of the Forager profession. You could walk all the way back to Stone Street, but it's much faster to use the Teleport Spell.
Brewing Up a Potion
Return to Ebsworth and use the Brown Kelp on him; he'll thank you for your help. Your character will then offer additional assistance and Ebsworth will ask you to help prepare the ingredients.
Head into the Apothecary and use the Brown Kelp on the Reagent Preparation Station. Use the resultant item on Ebsworth and he'll then ask you to actually make the healing potion; Ebsworth will also give you one Bottle.
Go back into the Apothecary and use the 10% Preparation Healing on the Standard Potion Station and you'll make one 10% Potion Healing. You'll only be able to make one since you run out of bottles; you'll need to buy more Bottles if you wish to make more potions.
Use the 10% Healing Potion on Ebsworth, and then use it on Captain Jal DeGreene. She'll get right up and recall the Guards to the Training Ground.
Earning Accolades (and Immunity)
Speak to Corporal Binns in the Training Ground and he'll commend you on a job well done. After that, Ingrina Pelegrin will walk by and teach you the Immunity Spell.
It's important to note that there are essentially two types of hostile enemies in the game: orange and red. Orange enemies can be attacked by you, but you can walk by them with no problem. Red enemies, however, can aggro you and start a battle even if you don't want to fight.
The Immunity Spell can be used to totally protect you from any damage. If you cast it before a fight starts, you can run by red enemies and they can't start a battle. If you're already in a fight, you can cast it by clicking the Immunity Spell button at the top of the screen. Keep in mind that it takes a few seconds to cast, so don't delay or you could end up dead!
Leveling Up and Exploring the World
Speak to Corporal Binns once more and he'll tell you that you need to get stronger before you can head out into Hopeforest. You'll need to get to a total Level of 60 and get some training with a bow before you can move on.
Take a moment to talk to the Quartermaster and ask him if he knows any magic; he'll teach you the "Quartermaster" spell which allows you to access the Quartermaster Bank and store your weapons and armor from anywhere in the world (as long as you're not in combat).
It will take quite a long time to level up the Guard profession to Level 60; instead, you should aim to level up multiple professions. I strongly recommend focusing on Forager and Alchemist, in particular, as those will allow you to gather the ingredients to make useful potions that will help you level up your other professions.
You'll also want to start collecting armor. Fight some level-appropriate enemies and they'll occasionally drop armor that you can equip. Armor usually won't increase your health, but it can give you resistances to a variety of attacks.
You're now free to explore the rest of Hopeport. There are plenty of enemies to fight, an Obelisk to restore, and a few mysteries to uncover. Have fun exploring the world of Brighter Shores, and don't forget to check out our other guides below!
How to Increase Your Health in Brighter Shores
You can increase your health in Brighter Shores by leveling up the combat profession of the zone you're in; you'll need to level up Guard in Hopeport, Scout in Hopeforest, and so on. Keep in mind that your equipment can only be used in the zone you found it in; you'll start over from 100 Health when you begin adventuring in a new zone.
How Tuning Works in Brighter Shores
Tuning in Brighter Shores is the process of magically activating a weapon or piece of armor for the Episode you're in. Most items you find are automatically Tuned, but some of them will have to be Tuned at that particular zone's Obelisk.
Untuned items (or Tuned items from another zone) will not give you any benefits whatsoever. Once an item has been Tuned to a zone, it can't be Tuned for another zone. This effectively means that you'll need a set of armor and weapons for each zone you go into.
What Happens if You Die in Brighter Shores?
If you die in Brighter Shores, you'll automatically be transported to the Hopetown Infirmary next to the Training Ground. There are no apparent penalties such as loss of money or XP as far as I can tell.
Where is the Brighter Shores Save File?
Brighter Shores is an online multiplayer game and the save files are stored server-side, so you won't be able to access them in any meaningful way.
Is Brighter Shores Multiplayer?
Yes, Brighter Shores is multiplayer. It is an online-only MMORPG.
How Do You Log Out of Brighter Shores?
You can log out of Brighter Shores by clicking the Settings gear at the top left of the screen and clicking the "Logout" button.
How Do You Quit Brighter Shores?
You can quit Brighter Shores by logging out to the title screen, pressing Ctrl-F to reduce the game from fullscreen, and clicking the X on the application window.
