Our Brighter Shores Guard Leveling Guide will go over how the Guard Profession works, along with some tips on how to level it efficiently.
How the Guard Profession Works in Brighter Shores
Guard is the first combat profession in Brighter Shores, covering the Chapter 1 zone Hopeport. Only enemies killed in Hopeport will contribute towards your Guard level, with gear obtained outside of Chapter 1 having reduced effectiveness against enemies here.
Enemies can be encountered in most part of Hopeport, though not all will attack on sight. Only enemies with red names will attempt to fight you straight away, with orange enemies staying passive until attacked.
During the early Chapter 1 story, you'll gain access to the Immunity Spell. This stops enemies from aggroing you, though it will wear off after a short amount of time.
Immunity can even be used to escape combat, either from the Spells menu or via the button under the battle UI. You'll also automatically be given the Immunity status after defeating red enemies.
Hopeport only contains a limited number of enemy types. However, each type of enemy will get progressively tougher as you increase your Guard level.
For example, the basic "Recruit" Sparring Guard will eventually become a level 12 "Rookie" Sparring Guard, with even more variants becoming available at higher levels. Selecting "Past action" after clicking an enemy allows you to fight previous versions of that enemy type.
Gearing
Gear in Hopeport primarily comes from random drops after defeating enemies. The same type of gear will have different stats based on both its level, and the rarity. Rarity is very important for gear strength — a Legendary piece of gear will always be stronger than a Common piece that's 15-20 levels higher.
For weapons, you can equip a 1-handed, 2-handed, and eventually a ranged weapon (after following the story) all at once, toggling between each during battle. Ranged weapons have very limited ammo which replenishes at the start of each fight.
Gear dropped in Hopeport only works properly in Chapter 1 areas. Once you leave Hopeport and reach Hopeforest, you'll have to switch to Scout gear.
You can switch (and sell) gear via the Quartermaster's building in Hopeport, next to the Training Ground. Talking to the Quartermaster will let you unlock a spell by the same name, giving you the ability to switch gear at any point outside of combat.
How to Level the Brighter Shores Guard Profession Fast
The best way to level the Guard Profession in Brighter Shores is to fight enemies around your level, obtaining gear along the way before moving onto the next tier of enemy.
Your level on its own doesn't have too much impact on your stats outside of HP, with gearing being more important. Because of this, it can sometimes be worth not switching to tougher enemies if your gear isn't quite ready yet.
Hopeport XP Potions can be crafted via the Alchemist profession, giving you a percentage boost based on the potion's level. Leveling Alchemist alongside Guard can be worth it in the long run for these potions, though gathering ingredients will require you to also level Forager and Gatherer at the same time.
If you're planning on not playing Brighter Shores for a few hours or more, it's worth heading to one of the passive leveling areas. These can be unlocked from level 20 Guard, and will allow you to kill enemies even while offline. However, XP gains are much slower than if you're fighting relevant enemies manually.
