Our Brighter Shores Fisherman guide will go over how to start this Hopeport Profession, including where to get tools and how higher level fish are unlocked.
How the Fisherman Profession Works in Brighter Shores
As with other Professions that involve collecting items, such as Forager and Gatherer, Fisherman in Brighter Shores requires the use of different tools depending on the fish.
However, even the very first fish you can catch requires a tool — a Fishing Spear in this case. A level 1 Fishing Spear can be bought for 12 silver coins from Melv's Fishing Supplies, a building east of the Town Square in Hopeport.
With the spear bought, you can start catching fish in shallow rivers by clicking on them and selecting "Catch". Shallow water fish come in groups of six, letting you catch four sets of fish spawns before you must clear your inventory.
At level 20 you'll unlock the use of Fishing Rods. Unlike the Spear, these require less movement. Instead, you'll have to gather or buy the right bait for each fish. Catching fish this way counts as a passive activity, meaning you can earn Fisherman XP while offline assuming you have enough bait.
Some fish are used as ingredients for Chef recipes. You can find out if a caught fish is an ingredient by clicking on it in your inventory and selecting "Info" — fish that are part of recipes will show that they can be stored in the Ingredients Bank.
All fish can also be sold at The Frequently Fresh Fish Stall on Eel Street (it's just before you reach the Central Waterfront in Hopeport.)
How to Level the Brighter Shores Fisherman Profession Fast
As with other gathering Professions, the best strategy for Fisherman is to catch whatever is currently the highest level. This also lets you gather up a lot of ingredients for Chef, with Fish being the main ingredient for a lot of recipes.
Unlike Forager, you can click on another fish and choose the catch option before you've already caught your current one. This makes it easy to line up your next catch without having to wait for the meter to fill.
From level 20 onwards, don't forget to lot out at the highest level passive fishing spot you have unlocked for some extra offline XP. As long as you have enough bait, this can help you make good progress on Fisherman leveling overnight.
You can also gain a few sources of extra XP bonus. For starters, higher levels of tools give big percentage bonuses when bought. Since these get progressively more expensive, you'll likely have to mix in leveling of more lucrative Professions like Guard (though selling fish makes an okay profit.)
Another source of bonus XP is XP Hopeport Potions that can be created by Alchemist or dropped by certain enemies like Thieves. These can speed up leveling a little, but only last for a short amount of time. We'd generally recommend saving these until your Fisherman is a higher level.
Finally, if you have a lot of money to burn there's the Enchantress Shop in Hopeport, south of Old Street East. Each tool can be enchanted to give small permanent XP boosts (we're talking under 1% per enchantment) but it's very expensive. Again, more worth it once your Fisherman has reached a higher level and you're bringing in more money.
