Bravely Default 2 has been out for a while, and it has been a godsend for fans of classic JRPGs. But there are a few systems and mechanics in it that aren't that well explained that can help make your experience even more fun. This guide is to one of those very systems: boat exploration.

Bravely Default 2 – How to Access the Boat
The good news is getting the boat happens in the starting town at the very beginning of the game. Once you finish the combat tutorial where you save an old woman from goblins. If you return to the town later, at the points where the game's tutorial introduces sidequests, you will find an icon for the old woman in a small hut. Speak to her again and you'll trigger a cutscene where she lets the heroes borrow her boat to go on expeditions in their spare time. This can be missed so be sure to do your due diligence.

Bravely Default 2 Boat – How Do Boat Expeditions Work?
The idea behind the boat expeditions are simple. You go to the old woman in the town and ask to go on an expedition. When you do this, a timer will appear. At this point, you put your Nintendo Switch into Rest Mode, preferably in its dock or anywhere there's a solid internet connection available. Next you just leave it in Rest Mode and go about your day. Go to work, read a book, cook some dinner, do a different hobby, go to sleep, whatever. Once you come back to the game, you'll get the results of the expedition. These include bumping into other players who are also online and getting items you can only get from this mode. The expeditions cap out after twelve hours.
The reason why you want to do these expeditions are for these unique items. Bravely Default 2 can get very grindy, and it can make long stretches of the game tedious. But rather than lose sleep, going on an expedition can get you special Orbs that grant you experience or job points. Better still, there's a chance to even get Buns which can raise the stats of various party members. Want Elvis to have higher Evasion? Take a chance on an expedition and see what happens. It's a good habit to get into if you want to get the most out of the game.
