There are a number of creatures to hunt in the regions of The Axis Unseen. With an achievement earned for every region you hunt all creatures in, it's worth the time to find even the most legendary of beasts. We've compiled a complete list of all creatures in The Axis Unseen, where to find them, and how to kill them.
There is a large variety of creatures roaming the wilds of The Axis Unseen. Many of them are increasingly rarer variations of the same creature, though some may be completely unique. Most are based off actual folklore, myth, and cryptid descriptions.
While there is a specific region the creatures tend to spawn in, you may encounter them in a neighboring region, especially at the border of the two. As the regions get more difficult, such as the Mountain, you can encounter beasts from any of the previous regions, especially the Forest.
Forest Creatures
Horned Beast (Common) | Diseased Horned Beast (Rare) | Elder Horned Beast (Legendary)
The Horned Beast is one of the first creatures you'll encounter when you enter the forest. It's similar to a deer in design, though the horns get bigger each version of the creature you encounter. Aim for the center of its chest when it runs towards you for a quick kill. Avoid shooting at its head due to the bone plating it has there.
I consistently was attacked by the Elder Horned Beast between the tall log building and the shrine where you unlock Fire Arrows.
Werewolf (Common) | Obsidian Werewolf (Rare) | Crimson Werewolf (Legendary)
These creatures resemble more of a wolf than the modern imagining of a werewolf. Aim for their head to get the quickest kill. Once they spot you, however, they'll start running in zigzag patterns instead of directly at you. You'll be able to hear them nearby thanks to their constant sniffing. To avoid them, it's best to walk over rocks.
I only encountered one Crimson Werewolf near the snowstorm in the Forest. It has red coloring and larger spikes than the other variants.
Bigfoot (Common) | Sasquatch (Rare) | Yeti (Legendary)
Bigfoot and his brethren can be found near poison clouds and deeper parts of the Forest. You'll often hear them roaring as they pound their chest. Both Bigfoot and Sasquatch have dark coloring, while the Yeti is all white. Aim for their heads but be prepared to shoot multiple arrows to take them down. Sneaking around the area with their tracks and getting a couple hits in before they can start charging towards you is a safe play.
The Yeti can be found in the snowstorm in the Forest. This unusual weather is found by heading through the second or third Portals from the left in the Forest chamber then heading towards the rock face. You need to be in the storm to encounter it. Use a fire arrow to set it ablaze to provide more visibility, while aiming for its head with regular wood or metal arrows.
Tree Golem (Rare) | Glowing Tree Golem (Legendary)
Both of these creatures will register as yellow with your Tremors power. They are tall and spindly, but you'll know they're close by the sound of breaking branches and world-shaking footsteps. They both require fire to be destroyed. If you don't have fire arrows, head for the bonfires scattered throughout the Forest. Walk near them with a wood arrow equipped and it'll catch on fire. Shoot those at the golems to burn them down.
Lurker (Legendary)
The Lurker is a skeletal creature with horns and the only one you can't kill your first time through the Forest. Wood and metal arrows bounce off it, and fire arrows do nothing to it on their own. To defeat it you need both the water arrow and fire arrow unlocked. Use the water arrow first to slow down the Lurker in a time bubble. Shoot a fire arrow at the bubble to blow it up.
You'll hear the sound of bones hitting each other when a Lurker is near.
Swamp Creatures
Kappa (Common) | Elder Kappa (Rare) | Ancient Kappa (Legendary)
These turtle beasts are somewhat hard to kill. They come charging at you and send you flying into the air. Arrows bounce off their shell. The best way to kill this line of creatures is to aim for the head, often waiting until they're charging right at you. I found it easier to kill them with a couple hits of the melee weapon than using bow and arrow.
Strix (Common) | Skinless Strix (Rare) | Bloody Strix (Legendary)
These bird human creatures let out a shrill note, similar to a bird chirp, whenever they're near. They're fast, so you'll need to reposition yourself or use melee if they notice you. Shooting their head while sneaking is the easiest way to take them out.
Erymanthian Boar (Common) | Spiked Boar (Rare) | Enraged Boar (Legendary)
These boars will punt you clear into space if they get the chance to. You get knocked so high, you'll start taking fall damage when you land. On top of that, they take quite a few wood arrows (5+) to go down. You'll hear oinks and some squeals, and Tremors will show yellow when one's nearby.
Sneaking up to their area and shooting them in the head will save you some arrows. I preferred running away to save time and headache until I unlocked metal arrows.
Greenman (Rare) | Elusive Greenman (Legendary)
Similar to the Tree Golems, Greenman are living swamp trees that can only be killed with fire. Three fire arrows will bring down the Greenman, while almost 10 are needed for the Elusive Greenman. On top of that, the legendary exudes a murky haze which makes it incredibly difficult to aim. Get the fire arrows on its feet, which you'll be able to see clearly if you're close, to get it burning.
Will O' The Wisp
These little guys are the tricksters of the Swamp. They have the same coloring as a light signifying a magic alter, luring you to it. You can't defeat it until you get the Water arrow, though. Use the exploding combo employed for Lurkers to destroy the Will O' the Wisp.
Darkness Creatures
Drekavac (Common) | Emerald Drekavac (Rare) | Tooth Fairy Drekavac (Legendary)
This line of creatures is easily the most annoying to hunt in The Axis Unseen. They're invisible, and you only really catch them out of the corner of your eye or briefly while they move from one area to another. You can hear them walking behind you. They wheeze like an old man when they're about to attack. I typically ready myself to use a melee weapon when I hear that. You can also run away and reposition yourself, then watch for any tracks to appear. Once you get an arrow into it, it's much easier to track due to the arrow's glow.
Gowrow (Common) | Shadowed Gowrow (Rare) | Amaranthine Gowrow (Legendary)
These creatures cloud themselves with darkness as they move around. You'll be able to hear their hooves as they move, as well as a hiss before they attack. If you look at the shadow they exude you can sometimes see their outline, allowing you to attack before they charge into the open.
When hit and directly after attacking they release a poison cloud. Unless you have the Toxic Breathing Power, you'll want to move as soon as one gets close to you to avoid the additional damage.
Huay Chivo (Common) | Paoxiao (Rare) | Baphomet (Legendary)
The goatmen of the Darkness are powered up versions of the Bigfoot line of creatures. They shake the ground when close and register as medium sized creatures for the Tremors power. You can often hear them baying in the distance and they will follow you quite a ways.
Use the same tactics as with Bigfoot, aiming for their heads. Even with metal arrows, a Huay Chivo will take 2-3 hits to go down unless it's a headshot with a fully drawn arrow on the bone bow.
Colossal Wraith (Rare)
Thanks to the twinkling lights of Darkness, actually spotting the Colossal Wraith can be a difficult task. Often times, you'll hear it before you see it. The Colossal Wraith gives off a hum-like sound that fills the space. When looking for it, you want to find a haze that is similar to a human in shape near the front of the mass of lights. To beat it, use the Water arrow and Fire arrow to explode it. You can also use the Water arrow and metal arrow to disperse the pieces with a high wind.
Screecher (Common)
The Screecher, while annoying, is the easiest creature to register to your journal. When you get close to it, a loud scream will pierce the air. While this calls nearby creatures to you, the Screecher itself explodes, leaving the skeleton it took over behind. That's because this beast is actually a small slug that can be seen along the spine of some horned skeletons in Darkness.
When getting rid of it, a single wood arrow will do. Aim directly for the slug. The arrow will bounce a small distance away, but you've avoided sounding the alarm. You'll know one is following you by the squelching sound you hear. You may also notice a skeleton moving closer to you, until it's close enough to be triggered.
Desert Creatures
Garkain (Common) | Vampire (Rare)
Similar to other The Axis Unseen creatures, these scrawny beasts hide in shadow clouds. What makes these different is they change form based on how fast they're going. Standing still, you can see the full body in the shadow and it can be damaged by arrows. Moving, they turn into a swarm of four bats which are impervious to arrow damage and can only be hurt by melee attacks. I personally prefer hitting them with the spear when they get close, but you can use a water arrow to slow them down then shoot them with arrows.
You'll know they're near by the sound of flapping and chittering of the bats.
Nuckelavee (Common) | Bloodied Centaur (Rare) | Chiron (Legendary)
These creatures will not die. Essentially, they pass out when you "kill" them, but will revive soon after. The first time you defeat each variation is the only time you'll earn energy from these beasts. While you may not get energy, they will hunt you all over the region, even joining you in the Crimson Ravine, once they have your trail. Beating them and running away before they revive is the only way to reset that.
Aiming for the "chest" area where a normal horse neck would protrude is the best way to beat them. Arrows will bounce off the skeleton upper body, so always target for the horse body.
Bunyip (Common)
The hallmark of this creature is the blue haze that it surrounds itself with. This blinds you, as well as causes poison damage. Being of medium size, it can also send you flying quite a distance. It's not particularly hard to defeat and isn't resistant to any type of arrow.
Sand Golem (Rare)
The Sand Golem is another rare creature that blends into the environment almost seamlessly. Found in sand storms, you'll notice a darker area of dust that is humanoid in shape. The only way to defeat Sand Golems are by slowing the humanoid part with water arrows and then using a metal arrow to dissipate it with wind.
Mazaocoatl (Legendary)
You might think you're imagining being followed in the Desert, but you'd soon fine you're wrong. Instead, a giant skull hunts you through the sands. The Mazaocoatl only moves when you do, but is much faster than your walking speed. Even when you're walking around an object or climbing a skeleton, this beast will draw closer to your location.
It's also impervious to wood arrows and fire arrows. Water arrows will slow it, but you only need to hit it with metal arrows to kill it. Once defeated, the skeleton will hang from the ceiling in the center area of your rest space, instead of showing up on a platform.
Crimson Ravine
Qalupalik (Common) | Ningyo (Rare) | Oannes (Legendary)
This creature isn't hard to kill, but it's hard to land a hit on. Not only does it charge at you in an erratic patter, but when it hits you it forms a small time bubble, slowing you. You can use a metal arrow to push yourself out quickly, but often I find just backing out and repositioning yourself to be the more efficient option. These can show up in groups of 2-3, but one will always spawn near an A-Mi-Kuk.
Migas (Common) | Cecaelia (Rare)
These squid creatures will teleport in their own ink clouds, appearing somewhere around you. They walk and use melee attacks, making it easy to counter with melee. If you can sneak up on them, you'll be able to get a killing shot before they disappear in darkness.
A-Mi-Kuk (Common) | Scarlet A-Mi-Kuk (Rare) | Elder A-Mi-Kuk (Legendary)
The A-Mi-Kuk can be heard coming thanks to the squelching sound its tentacles make. The more tentacles the rarer the variation. It's a medium creature, but it doesn't put up too much of a fight. You can kill them with arrows or melee, whichever is easier for you.
Flesh Golem (Rare) | Titan Flesh Golem (Legendary)
These tower piles of moving flesh are hard to see and hard to beat. They need to be exploded, but since they move rapidly, you have to get the water arrow in front of it to slow down the main portion of the golem. Use a fire arrow to blow it up. It may take a few tries to land the water arrow in the right place, but they only take a couple explosions to defeat.
The Multitude (Common)
You can tell the difference between the Flesh Golems and The Multitude by the direction the bits are moving. If it's moving horizontally, then it's The Multitude. Any vertical movement is a Flesh Golem. There's no difference in how you defeat the Multitude, but you need to get all of it in time bubbles to actually destroy it. Setting it on fire also works.
Mountain Creatures
Zhar-Ptitsa (Common) | Alicanto (Rare) | Phoenix (Legendary)
This bird skeleton creature sets things on fire when you attack it, which can be helpful if you're surrounded or being tracked by other beasts. However, that makes it harder to defeat. Wood arrows bounce right off and fire arrows don't damage it. They are pretty fast, though you can use the fires they set to help track them. Melee attacks or metal arrows will defeat them.
Ijiraq (Common) | Obsidian Ijiraq (Rare) Tariaksuq (Legendary)
Similar to the Horned Beast, the Ijiraq are deer like and have horns, but the face on these guys is more human. They also fling your arrows back at you, making them disappear. Use melee attacks until you can one hit them in the chest with a metal arrow. If the arrow kills them, if won't be shot back and you can collect it like normal.
Nanook (Common) | Grizzled Nanook (Rare) | Otso (Legendary)
These bears are ferocious. Not only are they large and loud, they can bounce you a considerable distance and inflict a lot of damage with a single swipe. Keep an eye on your health and use Healing Crosses while in the air to survive.
Taking down this line of creatures requires a lot of arrows, regardless of type. Wood, metal, or fire, it doesn't matter. You'll be shooting at least metal arrows into them before they stop moving.
The Otso I encountered was at the top of the mountain, helping to guard the final Portal that signifies the end of the game.
Bone Golem (Rare)
Like other golems, the Bone Golem is tall and constructed of its namesake material. These are typically found around the later portals on the upper regions of the Mountain.
Arrows bounce off of it, but a water arrow will stick at any point on its body. You'll need to use the water and fire arrow explosion combo to defeat it.
Remnant (Common)
If you've ever played Dungeons & Dragons, then the Remnant will be familiar to you. A flying, flaming skull, Remnants will launch themselves at you and then explode. You can just dodge away from them at the moment it should hit you. You can also use a metal arrow to destroy it before it has a chance to go kaboom.
Mountain Guardian Bone Golem
While you don't need to kill the Mountain Guardian to fully hunt all the creatures of the Mountain or finish the game, this towering construct is present before the final Portal at the Mountain's peak.
Those are all the creatures you can encounter in The Axis Unseen. Most can be killed simply by turning them into pin cushions, but many of the legendary beasts require certain arrows or combinations to defeat.
