This guide tells you the results of the Avowed An Untimely End Quest choice and explains what happens if you kill your assassin in Dawnshore or let him go — and why mercy may be the better option.

Your first trip to Paradis starts... bad.

Avowed An Untimely End Quest Choice | Should you Kill your Assassin or Free Him?

When it comes to the Avowed An Untimely End quest choice, it's a better decision to show mercy and let your assassin go rather than kill him. Aside from avoiding a useless fight, it will also make a later Side Quest easier.

Let's recap: when you first enter the city of Paradis in Dawnshore, you're immediately struck in the gut by an arrow. This leads to a conversation with The Voice, after which you wake up. Later on, you'll track down your assassin and confront him.

The assassin tells you that he saw a vision of you from the gods and that it compelled him to kill you. You have the chance to forgive him or fight him.

Should you choose to kill your assassin, you'll loot the Blackwing Armor Light Armor from him. This Unique Item has two enchantments that give you +30% Stealth Attack Damage and +25% Move Speed, respectively. It's a nice piece of armor, but it's obviously somewhat niche.

On the other hand, freeing him will net you a piece of Adra (useful for upgrading your equipment) and some Skeyt. You'll also get a "Writ of Passage" which will be helpful in the next zone, Emerald Stair.

When you reach Emerald Stair, you'll be able to take on the Side Quest "Food Theft." You'll eventually learn that the Paradisan Rebels have fled Dawnshore and holed up in the Riverside Cave in northern Emerald Stair. Furthermore, they stole the food from Sielo the Farmer who needs it for his sick wife.

If you don't spare your assassin, you won't have the Writ of Passage and the only way you'll be able to get Sielo's stolen food back is by fighting a dozen or so Paradisan Rebels, three of whom are named characters and pretty tough overall.

However, sparing your assassin makes them a little more open to peace — you'll be able to suggest that they keep the food in exchange for medical supplies for Sielo's wife instead.

With the peaceful option selected, you can then take the medical supplies back to Sielo. Refuse to take any payment from him and he'll also reward you with the Unique Ring "Forager's Friend" which makes food restore 20% more Health and Essence.

Paradisan Rebels Giving You Medical Supplies in the Riverside Cave in Emerald Stair
Peace is sometimes an option.

Fighting the Paradisan Rebels doesn't get you much of anything other than a little experience. None of these people — including the three named characters — have any noteworthy Unique Items as far as I can tell. And frankly, the fight is a hassle unless you have excellent equipment.,

The only reason not to spare your assassin is if you really want the Blackwing Armor. Stealth combat isn't as good in Avowed as it is in some other games, though, so it's probably best to just let your assassin go.
