April 2018's Video Game Releases: God of Cardboard

After a chock-a-block February and March, things calm down somewhat for April. With only a handful of major releases, both the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch get some exciting exclusives. Xbox One owners aren't getting quite as much, but there's still a few interesting games here and there.

April 3rd

Crisis on the Planet of the Apes (PlayStation VR, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift)

Two releases for VR come out on April 3rd including Crisis on the Planet of the Apes for PlayStation VR, HTC Vive, and Oculus Rift. This VR shooter takes place in the Planet of the Apes universe.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR (HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Windows Mixed Reality)

The other release for VR on April 3rd is The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR for HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Windows Mixed Reality. This VR version of Skyrim includes the base game plus all the add-ons" Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn. You can read our review here.

April 4th

Penny Punching Princess (Nintendo Switch, PlayStation Vita)

The latest game from NIS America Penny Punching Princess comes to Nintendo Switch and PlayStation Vita on April 4th. In this cutesy brawler, money rules the kingdom as you play as a princess punching money out of enemies to strengthen her arsenal.

April 5th

2064: Read Only Memories (Nintendo Switch)

2064 read only memories

Previously released last year on almost every other console, 2064: Read Only Memories makes its way to Nintendo Switch on April 5th. This indie visual novel is set in the future and earned critical acclaim last year.


April 10th

Dark Rose Valkyrie (Microsoft Windows)

Released on PlayStation 4 last year Dark Rose Valkyrie comes to Microsoft Windows via Steam on April 10th. This real-time combat RPG takes place in a world where a Chimera virus has infected the population.

Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality (PlayStation VR)

Also coming out last year, previously on Microsoft Windows, and now releasing April 10th for PlayStation VR is Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality. In this VR game, you play in the world of Rick and Morty, where you can tinker in Rick's garage.

Extinction (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows)

Skill-based combat

One of the bigger releases of this month Extinction comes to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows on April 10th. Try to defeat colossal ogres in the hopes of saving humanity from Extinction.

April 12th

The Snack World (Nintendo Switch)

Coming out last year in Japan The Snack World sees its first release in the West on Nintendo Switch on April 12th. This snack based RPG was developed by Level 5 the developers behind Professor Layton and Yokai Watch and will be released for Nintendo 3DS later this year.

April 17th

Yakuza 6: The Song of Life (PlayStation 4)

Following delays from last month Yakuza 6: The Song of Life will see its western release on PlayStation 4 on April 17th. This will be the final game for series protagonist Kazuma Kiryu and is set in Yakuza staple Kamurocho as well as all new Onomichi. You can read our review here.



April 20th

Nintendo Labo Variety Kit (Nintendo Switch)

One of the most eagerly anticipated games of the year Nintendo Labo comes to Nintendo Switch on April 20th. Nintendo Labo comes in 2 different sets and combines make-it-yourself cardboard toys with fun software for your Switch. The first set is the Variety Kit which includes Toy Con RC Cars, Fishing Rod, House, Motorbike, and Piano.

Nintendo Labo Robot Kit comes to Nintendo Switch on the same day April 20th. The second set is the Robot Kit which includes Toy Con Robot.

God of War (PlayStation 4)

The other highly anticipated title of the month also comes out on April 20th for PlayStation 4 in the form of God of War. Depending on how you look at it, this is the fourth in the mainline series of God of War games and sees an older Kratos teaching his son the ways of war.

April 24th

Gal Gun 2 (Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4)

The latest game by PCube comes to Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 on April 24th in the way of Gal Gun 2. In a world where everyone woman loves you, you must fend off their advances with pheromone spray.

BattleTech (Microsoft Windows, Mac OSX, Linux)

Turn-based strategy game BattleTech is set for release on Microsoft Windows, Mac OSX, and Linux on April 24th. Created by some of the developers behind MechCommander and MechAssault, you play as a mercenary commander taking over a set of different combat vehicles.

South Park: Fractured But Whole (Nintendo Switch)

Delayed from last month South Park: Fractured But Whole arrives on Nintendo Switch on April 24th. The second in South Park’s series of RPGs, South Park: Fractured But Whole came out in October last year. In this latest game, you play as your own South Park original character on a superhero-themed quest.

Runbow (PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch)

Released previously for Xbox One, Windows and Wii U, Runbow comes to PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch on April 24th. In this platforming party game, you can play against up to 8 players locally or 9 players online.

April 26th

Solo (Microsoft Windows)

Beautiful indie game Solo will see its first release on Microsoft Windows on April 26th. This introspective puzzler sees you exploring relationships as you travel across islands.

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Trilogy (Nintendo Switch)

Released last year on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Trilogy comes to Nintendo Switch on April 26th. This trilogy includes Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm, Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2, and Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 Full Burst and each title are available to purchase separately.
