Surviving Mars is a city-builder based on Mars, our interstellar neighbor down the block. Players can choose from a number of different Sponsor organization and Commander Profiles in order to suit their playstyle or set up a challenge they'd like to overcome. Once you've gotten your first rocket all loaded up, it's time to land somewhere on the red planet and begin your colony.
Four different types of unique hazards in Surviving Mars provide different challenges for players; each of these hazards will shape how you build and protect your colony. Cold Waves will necessitate Subsurface Heating facilities are strategically placed to keep some buildings from freezing over while Meteors will smash critical infrastructure to pieces unless you have defensive lasers covering the important bits of your colony. A good landing site will have only one of these hazards to contend with, but more ambitious players might pick somewhere more challenging and find themselves dealing with a plethora of planetary problems.
Adding to the mystique of the game are Mysteries, nine interesting quests that serve as a sort of story backdrop for Surviving Mars. Mysteries are rated on three difficulty levels and may fundamentally change the gameplay for players. Many of the Mysteries present players with choices, and your actions may result in unlocking new and interesting technologies or equipment that you wouldn't otherwise be able to acquire in vanilla gameplay. Randomized Breakthrough technologies ensure that no two games will be the same.
The game isn't necessarily over once you've beaten the Mystery you've chosen - you can keep building and expanding your Colony until you're blue in the face. Keep things small with a humble colony of a few domes or shoot for the stars with a massive complex powered by an Artificial Sun. Build a thriving colony on the red planet through a mix of ingenuity, raw capitalism, and sheer grit.
