DRM-free digital games distributor GOG has just kicked off their Japanese Sale featuring a bunch of great JRPGs and other titles from the last two decades. Along with the sale came the introduction of their lovely mascot Gog-chan, which of course immediately kicked off a furious maelstrom of replies from all sides ranging from absolute adoration to allegories involving waifus and garbage receptacles.

While opinions on Gog-chan may be divided, the games on sale are a good bit less contentious. We've highlighted a few of the standout titles - have a look at what's up for grabs in the GOG Japanese Sale!

Agarest: Generations of War ($2.99, 80% off) has you commanding a squadron of tough warriors in a strategy RPG with lots of great combo attacks and an interesting storyline. Ages ago, the Gods of Light defeated the Gods of Darkness and combined the dead Gods' corpses to create a new world. The forces of darkness are returning, and it's up to you and your band of heroes to combat them and avert the destruction of the world. Find yourself a lovely wife to be your companion and help you lead your warriors to victory and prepare the next generation for some seriously tough battles!

EARTHLOCK ($17.99, 40% off) is set on the tidally-locked world of Umbra, a planet that stopped spinning thousands of years ago. This modern fantasy RPG has you exploring both the light and dark sides of Umbra, solving devious puzzles, and battling tons of deadly creatures. Take the desert scavenger Amon and his friends into the depths of darkness and destroy a growing evil before it's too late!

Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1 ($5.99, 80% off) is a game in the GOG Japanese Sale that epitomizes the Japanese phenomenon of anthropomorphizing things into cute waifus. In the world of Gameindustri, four CPU goddesses battled it out and banished the goddess Neptune from the heavens. Neptune has lost all of her memories, but she is joined by some friends who are more than willing to help her save the world! This strange tale that was once only available on consoles is now available to play on PC with great graphical updates that look stunning in HD.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky ($9.99, 50% off) is one of those strange cases where it's a sub-series of games (The Legend of Heroes) which is itself a sub-series of games (Dragon Slayer). In a world where Orbal energy has revolutionized life for everyone, war has also gotten altogether more dangerous thanks to this powerful new technology. Join Estelle and Joshua as they explore the Kingdom of Liberl in search of their missing father with over 50 hours of fantastic JRPG gameplay that has been beloved by Japanese gamers for over a decade.

Ys Origin ($5.99, 70% off) is set in the land of Ys 700 years before the events of Ys IYs II. The world is on the brink of destruction as demonic hordes threaten mankind and forces the goddesses to carry their people away to the clouds. Even so, the demons are tenacious and erect a massive tower to continue the battle. Command one of three unique playable characters as you head into the Devil's Tower and try to find the missing goddesses before calamity befalls all of humanity!

Our last highlighted game in the GOG Japanese Sale is Way of the Samurai 3 ($7.99, 60% off). Set in the tumultuous Sengoku era, Way of the Samurai 3 has you taking the reins of a mysterious lone warrior who explores Japan and meets all sorts of interesting villagers, warriors, and bandits. This action game is a title where even the tiniest choice can make a difference - do you help someone in need or do you take advantage of them? Will you try to find a peaceful solution with a warrior or fight to the death? Your actions can result in any one of 20 different endings, giving players a good bit of replayability in this particular game.

This is but a sampling of the many fine titles that are available to pick up in the GOG Japanese Sale - head on over to their website and take a look at the full selection! Whether you want to pick up an entire series, a collector's edition, a couple of OSTS, or a little bit of DLC, there's plenty of great pieces of Japanese gaming that you can get your hands on right now! You have just about a week before these deals are gone.
