As ever for a member of its legendary series, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is easily one of 2017's most anticipated titles. Coming to the Nintendo Switch and Wii U, details regarding the newest entry into the Zelda mythos have been slowly revealed. After rumors in November that Breath of the Wild would not be a launch title for the Switch, the official Nintendo Switch presentation thankfully revealed that the game would, in fact, be releasing alongside Nintendo's latest console on March 3rd.

And now, thanks to an IGN Portugal interview with game director Eiji Aonuma (and translated by Dualshockers, we know that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is due to have at least one alternate ending, based on certain "criteria" that players may or may not meet.

“There is an alternate ending if you meet certain criteria. If you do a few things, you may see a different ending,”
The concept of alternatives endings, while commonplace in RPGs like Mass Effect or Dragon Age, are a series first for a Legend of Zelda game. While the timeline of the official Zelda series is often viewed to be a massively convoluted mess, the games themselves have usually stuck to a single track with a beginning and an end.

Eiji was also able to confirm the presence of Epona in Breath of the Wild, though he was close-lipped about details.

“As for Epona, she’s in Breath of the Wild, but I do not want to reveal details about how to find her, or what that means.”
Named after the Gallo-Roman goddess of horses, Epona has been Link's horse since The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Given the much trumpeted open world of Breath of the Wild, Epona's inclusion would presumably make traveling between points much easier.

In other Breath of the Wild news, a now deleted Amazon UK listing gave away more crucial details on the scope of the final game.

Quick take

While Team Zelda have never shied away from trying new mechanics in their games (the time twisting nature of Majora's Mask's gameplay being a particularly strong example), the addition of alternate endings can be a tough trick to pull off. Many seasoned developers can still find it hard to balance the multi-choice angle with a compelling story, and have disappointed fans in the past. It would also be interesting to see Nintendo make more of a link with Epona's namesake. Perhaps in Breath of the Wild, Epona will be present as the Goddess of Horses? We'll have to wait and see.
