Earlier this week, Zeboyd Games announced another entry into their series of RPGs. Zeboyd Games wrote in a blog post on Monday a handful of minor details about their latest game. Cthulhu Saves Christmas is a turn-based RPG, presumably taking place in the same universe as Cthulhu Saves the World. The tongue-in-cheek RPG parodied characters and creatures from Lovecraftian lore. Cthulhu appears as a nominal hero, working to spread insanity across the globe. His friends included his clingy love interest Umi, October the necromancer, and Sharpe, the sentient sword.

This time around, Cthulhu has a number of new allies to help him save the world or at least Christmas. Belsnickel, the Snow Maiden, and Baba Yaga-chan join the tentacled terror in his quest to save Santa Claus. Along the way, Cthulhu and his party will have to thwart various members of the Christmas League of Evil. Among his foes are the Krampus, Mari Lwyd, and various other wretched wintertime rapscallions.

Zeboyd Games wrote that players could "insanify their enemies," a core combat mechanic from Cthulhu Saves the World. Insanity often changed a foe's statistics and tactics, requiring players to stay on their toes. In addition to its turn-based combat, Zeboyd Games also announced players could also build "R'lyehtionship levels." This changes their relationship with their friends and foes in various segments inspired by life sims.

More details are forthcoming, with Zeboyd Games planning to add a trailer and more information at a later date. In the meantime, tentacles!

Quick Take

Cthulhu Saves the World is a funny, entertaining romp through the Cthulhu mythos. It featured a solid challenge and required players to think carefully. The characters were funny, and each felt like they contributed to the party in a unique way. If you like Cthulhu Saves the World, Breath of Death VII, or Cosmic Star Heroine, then Cthulhu Saves Christmas is something to watch. Cthulhu Saves Christmas isn't the only cosmic horror RPG coming out, though. Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones was just announced as well.
