When Playtonic Games launched their Kickstarter campaign for Yooka-Laylee on May 1st of last year, the project reached its funding goal in under an hour. Since then, Playtonic has been mostly silent about the game, opting to keep the public in the dark until there was something more substantial to show from the game. However, a lot of that changed today in a recent post on Playtonic’s website, where they not only revealed more about the game’s upcoming beta, but also some more details concerning collectibles in the game and two new characters being added.

The gameplay demo being included in the beta goes by the name of the Toybox, and it is very different from your average beta or demo. Kickstarter backers who backed at the appropriate tiers are going to be given access to a sandbox that will allow players to get a feel for Yooka-Laylee without spoiling anything from the actual game. The sandbox area will include collectibles and secrets to sniff out, as well as props to interact with. The Yooka-Laylee beta experience will be available sometime this July.

The post from Playtonic’s website also went into some detail concerning some of the collectibles that you will be able to find in the final game. The first collectible goes by the name of Butterfly Energy, which refills the player’s health and power meter. The next collectible talked about was Pagies, but the post didn’t give away very much info on what these Pagies will actually do, only that they have the “power to unlock – and expand – the magical Grand Tomes held captive in Hivory Towers.” Lastly, Yooka-Laylee will also include collectible Quills, which can be used to unlock new moves that can be purchased in virtually any order.

Playtonic also revealed two new characters that will be coming to Yooka-Laylee at launch; Dr. Puzz and Dr. Quack. Dr. Quack is being described as a doctor making the most out of a bad situation, but these decisions may have led him to lead a more immoral life. Dr. Puzz, on the other hand, is a much more morally rigid character, who uses her scientific expertise to help Yooka and Laylee on their journey.

Yooka-Laylee was originally slated for release sometime this October, but in Playtonic’s latest post they implied that the game might be delayed in order to release a final product that is completely finished and polished.

What do you think of the upcoming Yooka-Laylee beta? Do you think it’s a better idea to release a sandbox experience rather than a vertical slice of the game? Let us know in the comment section below!
