Players who are looking forward to the sequel to in 2012 released tactical game XCOM: Enemy Unknown only have to wait a couple more months until they can get their hands on XCOM 2. Game publisher 2K and developer Firaxis (Sid Meier's Civilization and XCOM: Enemy Unknown) have released more details on the upcoming release, as well as a new trailer.

The Retaliation trailer showcases some in-engine footage, as well as some more details on the game's story narrated by Jon Bailey (Honest Trailers and the spokesman for the Council in the first XCOM). The trailer shows the player's new headquarters, a flying base named Avenger, stolen from the aliens who invaded Earth, as well as several level environments that are significantly more varied than the levels in the first game. The developer already unveiled several new locales on a weekly basis, such as the Advent city center, the overgrown wilderness, small townships and shanty towns. The game will also feature Dark Events, a mechanic which adds randomly generated modifiers to the game that will impact gameplay, sometimes in significant ways.

In addition to this, 2K has released more details on XCOM 2's Digital Deluxe Edition. Players who purchase this edition will get XCOM 2XCOM: Enemy Unknown, a digital copy of the game's soundtrack composed by Timothy Wynn (The Punisher, Red Faction Guerilla) as well as the Reinforcements Pack, which bundles up 3 pieces of post-release DLC for a discounted price, making this a season pass, essentially. According to Firaxis, the following pieces of content are included in the Reinforcements Pack:

  • Anarchy's Children is a rebellion-themed DLC featuring more dramatic soldier customizations. (To be released in Spring 2016)
  • Alien Hunters introduces new soldier customizations and gameplay themed around XCOM as an elite alien hunting unit. Face off against “Ruler” aliens with new, more powerful weapons and armor. Experience a new dramatic mission & confrontation. (To be released in Summer 2016)
  • Shen's Last Gift introduces a new soldier class with unique upgradeable weapons, armor and customization features, and a new narrative-driven mission and map. (To be released in Summer 2016)
This pack, which can also be bought separately, adds new customization options for your soldiers, as well as a new class and 2 missions exclusive to the Reinforcements Pack.

The digital deluxe edition will cost you $74.99, with pre-ordering players also gaining access to the Resistance Warrior Pack, which includes more customization items and an exclusive "Survivor of the Old War" (which is the war from XCOM: Enemy Unknown) recruit for your barracks. If you want to order the Reinforcements pack separately it'll cost you $19.99.

XCOM 2 got delayed earlier this year, with the game now scheduled to release on February 5, 2016 exclusively on Microsoft Windows PC's, Mac OS X and Linux operating systems. Creative director Jake Solomon confirmed that the game will support player-made mods earlier this year. While the developer is not opposed to the idea of releasing the game on consoles, Solomon has gone on record saying that the developer's focus is on PC platforms for the foreseeable future, probably due to XCOM: Enemy Unknown's unexpetedly low sales on consoles.

I've been playing games since I was just barely able to walk so I might as well write about them.
