Xbox One Update

The October system update for the Xbox One is out right now according to the Major Nelson Blog.

The full changelog is available in the above link, but the above video summarises what this update is all about. The most notable change is the improved navigation and functionality of the ‘snap’ feature, being able to quickly access functions such as the friends list, messages, game DVR, a clock and battery indicator by double tapping the Xbox One button on the controller. The friends list and messenger snap is especially useful as it no longer disrupts the game if you just want to chat with friends. Still missing in action is voice messaging, but hey, better than nothing right?

The achievements app and friends section have been updated to show what games your friends have been playing recently. and a monthly gamerscore leaderboard to see how you stack up against friends.

The media player now supports DLNA streaming and MKV support, which is great for those of us who watch animation encoded in MKV. According to some of the comments on the Major Nelson Blog, there are some types it still can’t play successfully, but it’s a start. Other small improvements include OneGuide  access for people on Xbox One or Smartglass who hail from Belgium, Chile, Columbia, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Portugal, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland and Russia. Sorry Australia and Brasil, you once again miss out.

There are plenty of other minor u.i changes, but these are what stood out for me. Many of these improvements Major Nelson has claimed are a result of user feedback, which is nice to see. I was always a little iffy with Windows ‘Metro’ u.i and it still hasn’t really clicked with me. But as far as updates go, these are all positive changes and I hope it distracts people long enough for them to forget about resolutiongate for a little while.
