Xbox Live Indie Games

Xbox Live Indie Games is shutting down. This was the section of the store that contained a lot of strange games but also a couple of diamonds in the rough. Some of the great hits include Mount Your Friends and I MAED A GAM3 W1TH ZOMBIES 1N IT!!!1, and yes that's the title.

Mount your friends
Awesome for parties, I promise

Indie Games Uprising is holding a tribute to XBLIG and the positive impact that it had. The Xbox Indie Games program meant that people could experience game development and continue a career if they so wished. The simple and straightforward way of being able to publish an indie game helped even AAA developers get games out easily.

To show support for developers who got their start on XBLIG this promotion is a "Where are they now" of some of the big games. A lot of these developers who got their start in this program are now creating games for Xbox One, PS4, and WiiU.

If you wish to check out the full tribute as well as read some quotes from developers. then you can head over to Indie Games Uprisings Tribute Page

The Xbox Live Indie Games program has likely been discontinued to continue support for ID@XBOX titles that are making plenty of headway on Xbox One. ID@XBOX gives similar types of aid to help push indie titles but not the same type of single developer style games that appeared on Xbox Live Indie Games.

Quick Take

The Xbox Live Indie Games was a fantastic program, the ease of access to new developers meant that almost anyone could create a game for others to enjoy. The drawback of this was that a lot of the games weren't very good, but the games that were stood out like no others. It will be sad to see a program like this go but to see how many people got their start that otherwise might not have is inspiring to us all.

What were your favorite Xbox Live Indie Games? are you disappointed that this support for the smallest of the indie developers is going away? Do you think some additional support should come to ID@XBOX?
