world war z season 2 update

Saber Interactive released some early details this week about the second season of free updates for their zombie shooter, World War Z. The first update, simply titled "Update Four" at this time, adds two new missions to the New York and Moscow campaigns. It's also going to introduce a "fiery new weapon," as well as the ability to "prestige" weapons for new skins and perks.

The meatier update comes after, in Update Five. It will add the long-awaited Horde Mode, new cosmetics, a new special zombie type, as well as introducing PvE cross-play between console and PC. Update Five will also add eight new paid cosmetics; four weapon skins and four character skins. The bulk of both updates will be free and are set to launch this winter.

The runaway success of World War Z contributed to the second round of free updates. Selling just under two million copies in a month is no mean feat, doubly so when it's an inspired by a movie from 2013. Previous updates have added a third mission to the Japanese level, a new "Extreme" difficulty, as well as a weekly challenge mode and associated visual customization system. Where our original review found that World War Z was light on content on release, in addition to adding more levels, Saber has been hard at work polishing lingering bugs.

Though co-op shooters remain popular, especially with the release of Borderlands 3 earlier this month, zombie shooters have been otherwise markedly absent. It's been ten years since the release of Left 4 Dead 2, and despite a promising trailer that popped up on Youtube earlier this year, Valve has otherwise left the series to rot. Thankfully, if you're starved for some satisfying zombie-killing action, World War Z is more than happy to provide. With the new updates coming sometime in the fourth quarter this year, it looks as though World War Z is going to try to sustain itself for a while longer.
