Some sad news for veteran World of Warcraft players. The MMO's Recruit-A-Friend program, which has been a part of the game for well over a decade now, is being discontinued at the beginning of June.

The announcement comes on their official website, which states that the program will cease operations on June 11th.

The Recruit-A-Friend program is essentially WoW's referral system, where players would invite friends to create a World of Warcraft account to grab several in-game benefits. The benefits were actually fairly lucrative, including free monthly subscriptions if players stayed active, to in-game rewards such as mounts, companion pets, Experience point bonuses and even co-operative powers such as summoning each other while partied together during a 90 day period.

One of the most unique aspects was the ability to grant players levels. As players level up, recruited players are given "grantable" levels that can then be given to lower-leveled, recruited players. Though there are some restrictions, players would be able to earn up to 39 levels to give out to linked recruited account, encouraging players to invite a ton of friends so they can quickly level up in the game.

Most of the benefits for the Recruit-A-Friend program would last only 90 days, so technically players who use the program up to it's June 11th ending date will likely still reap the benefits for themselves.

It should be noted that Blizzard is planning to replace the program with something new, although no details have been given at this time. Blizzard also gave no timetable for when the new program will be implemented, just stating that "the program will be back in its new form before you know it."
