World of Tanks: Mercenaries, a major update to the console version of Wargaming's tank battle game, is now live on Xbox One & PlayStation 4 according to a news post on the game's official website.

The storyline has had a bit of a shift for the new mercenary additions to the roster. World War 2 never ended, and both the Axis and Allied nations have rapidly grown tired of war. Experienced, battle-hardened tank crews have decided to sell their services to the highest bidder, and that's where you as a player come in. New single-player content will let you take on challenging mercenary missions using some of the game's new kitbashed tanks. Have a gander at the official launch trailer to get a glimpse at what's in store:

The new tanks in World of Tanks: Mercenaries can be unlocked by completing contracts. Contracts consist of up to eight stages, each with as many as three different tasks to complete. Completing all of the stages will unlock a garage slot, a new mercenary tank, and a new commander for you to charge into battle with in the multiplayer game mode. Mercenary tanks belong to a new "Mercenary" nation that is distinct from the country-aligned factions that already exist in the game.

A new War Stories Campaign called The Heist will have tankers trying their best to acquire nuclear material from a joint US-Soviet facility at the behest of a mysterious client. You and your AI pals must outmaneuver tank destroyers, take out static emplacements, and battle your way across missions packed chock-full of heavy metal.

A lot of changes have been made to the patch including several overhauls to existing maps - be sure to read through the patch notes for all the details. World of Tanks: Mercenaries is now available to play on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
