Wizkids, creators of the Clix miniature wargaming system have signed a license to produce HeroClix figurines based on the hit sci-fi tv series The Orville. The announcement was made via WizKids' website last Friday in a press release which stated that the first major product for the new line would be a bumper starter set featuring most of the main cast, including Ed Mercer, Kelly Grayson, Dr. Clair Finn, Lt. Alara Kitan, Lt. Gordon Malloy, Lt. Commander Bortus and Lt. Commander John LaMarr.

The Orville is a sci-fi/comedy television series, currently in its second season, which is set 400 years in the future aboard a space ship which goes on various missions in deep space. The series is known to have been primarily inspired by Star Trek, although it also takes inspiration from other classic sci-fi tv series such as The Twilight Zone and has a very tongue-in-cheek sense of humor characteristic of its creator/main star Seth MacFarlane.

In the announcement Justin Ziran, president of WizKids, said:

“We’re particularly excited to bring The Orville on board, rather than treading a line between serious and playful, the series is both simultaneously, which is a quality you see reflected in most HeroClix games.”
It seems clear that WizKids is hoping to play on the mixture of the dramatic and the comedic which has become a defining trait of the show. The new series of figurines will be available at some point during fall of 2019 and will be available in North America from Alliance and Diamond distributors exclusively. There is no word on when or if the figures will see an international release.
