Windjammers 2 has finally been announced. After years of wondering if and when it'll ever happen, fans of the disc-throwing Neo Geo classic are finally getting a direct sequel. French studio DotEmu, known for their ports of 16-bit games, including Windjammers to PS4 and Vita, will be tackling development.
Windjammers 2 is set for a 2019 release and will be coming to PC and Switch. Windjammers will also be coming to Switch on October 23 for $14.99. Windjammers 2 is being described as "more of what fans love" about the original with a fresh hand-drawn art style. DotEmu is also promising new characters, stages and moves, local PvP, and "enhanced" online multiplayer modes.
For those who are unfamiliar, Windjammers is a fast and frantic game where two players throw a disc back and forth, scoring points when they get the disc past the other player. Players can utilize fighting game-style moves to get an edge on their opponent.
Windjammers has always had a dedicated fanbase, but that has grown into a cult following in recent years, which eventually led to the game being ported to PS4 and Vita.
“Growing the Windjammers community over the past two years has been a lot of fun, and with that growth we see a great opportunity to continue to innovate on its timeless and fun gameplay,” Cyrille Imbert, the CEO of Dotemu said. “Thanks to that experience, we have a clear idea of how to make Windjammers 2 as fun and entertaining as the original.”
