Yesterday, PlayFusion and Games Workshop announced that Warhammer: Age of Sigmar: Champions would be coming to the Nintendo Switch and Steam PC/Mac. It has also already been released on Android/iOS devices.

Last September, Warhammer: Age of Sigmar: Champions was released for Android and iOS devices, and has already had over 1 million digital matches played, and over 20 million physical cards sold. Yes, you heard that right: players are able to scan their physical cards and take them online. Onslaught, an expansion containing 128 cards, was released on November 30 on both physical and digital stores and you can read some thoughts about one of the decks here.

“The team are utterly thrilled with the opportunity to bring Warhammer Champions to new audiences and new platforms,” said Mark Gerhard, CEO and Co-Founder of PlayFusion. “The response for the physical and digital game has already been incredible, and we just can't wait to watch that grow to new heights. With the release of our Set 2 cards in Onslaught, and a whole heap of new features we have planned, there's always going to be something new to try. And now, there will be a much bigger community to try with!”

The game contains a "robust" tutorial for players to learn the ropes, as well as the ability to play against AI or other players in Casual mode. There are also AI challenges, "full narrative" campaigns, and a Ranked mode that includes "huge rewards" for players who reach a high enough rank.

Warhammer: Age of Sigmar: Champions will be released on February on Steam and later in Q1 for the Nintendo Switch. It is currently available on mobile devices and is a physical card game. You can read our look at the tabletop founder's pack iteration here.

 Quick Take

Being able to use physical cards online is a great idea, and has me looking forward to trying this game out. I doubt it will knock Hearthstone off its pedestal, but more competition--particularly competition with an internationally-known brand-- can't hurt, especially if its a good game. We'll see.
