Recently, Blizzard Entertainment launched Warcraft III's PTR (Public Test Realm). The fifteen-year-old title's patch 1.28.6 PTR invites players to "... test the new Map Pools for 1's, 2's, 3's, 4's, and Free-for-All."

Essentially, online play for those that participate in Warcraft III's ranked mode is going to go under some marked changes, which are being made so that Warcraft III can shift into a more user-friendly experience for a modern audience.

The general improvements added to the game include balancing creep camp difficulty and creep drop table progression from early to late game, balancing all start locations for the total amount that can be collected and starting distance from lumber, balanced expansion distance from starting locations (so that the distance between the starting base and second base is equal for all players), and reducing visual competition during gameplay so that players can focus better, among other things.

These are only a few changes that have been made, so if one wants to review the full list, please go here.

Known issues include an acknowledgment for long queue times in Warcraft III's matchmaking, along with the fact that automated tournaments and ladder board are not functional on the PTR, as well as the fact that while in-game latency has improved, it, "... still needs work to meet modern standards" according to Blizzard.

For those that have a legitimate CD-Key for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne and want to try the Warcraft III PTR, be sure to go here.

Quick Take:

It is gratifying to see Warcraft III continue to receive patches after such a long period of time, especially knowing that while it is an incredible game, it is still a title that is fifteen years old and could do with some modernization. Hopefully, Diablo II is next.
