Today Nintendo revealed a new VR spectator mode being added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that uses the Nintendo Labo VR Kit.  The new mode is free and comes to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in the new Version 3.1 update to the game. The new mode allows players to spectate CPU v. CPU matches on dozens of stages as well as battle against a CPU as P1 in a one on one setting.

The new VR mode lets players get up close and personal with the action on the screen. Players can zoom in close into the fight taking place and look all over with a 360-degree field of vision to take in the sights of the fight as well as the stages themselves. The mode is compatible with "limited, timed, offline battles." and can be found by going through the Games & More menu from the main menu. There is only one way to use the new VR mode to spectate when you've been one of the fighters and that is by spectating a one on one match between you and one CPU. Unfortunately, there is no way at the moment to play an actual match while in the new VR mode, but there is always the possibility of support for VR matches being added in a later update.

While Nintendo Labo VR is an entry-level experience for VR, it is perhaps no surprise that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate would explore that territory. The creator of the series, Masahiro Sakurai, has expressed interest in Virtual Reality and once was approached by Oculus to work with the VR company, an offer he would decline to work on Smash Ultimate and other projects.

This announcement and release of the VR mode for Smash Bros. will hopefully allow Nintendo to focus on larger more impactful updates and content releases that will be coming down the line at E3. Nintendo's press conference for E3 will be held on June 11 in the form of a Nintendo Direct. Make sure to keep tuned into us here for our E3 coverage to make sure you don't miss any potential Super Smash Bros. Ultimate announcements Nintendo might have planned.

How do you feel about the addition of this VR mode using Nintendo Labo being added to Smash Bros.? Would you want the VR mode to be expanded to allowing its use for multiplayer battles?
