In celebration of the games 20th Anniversary, popular PC shooter Unreal Gold is being given away free on digital service GOG today.

The game will be free for the next 48 hours on the platform, according to a recent post by GOG earlier today.

Unreal Gold is the full package of the first game in the Unreal series, containing both Unreal and it's expansion Return to Na Pali. First released in 1998 by publisher GT Interactive, Unreal was the brainchild of several development teams, including Digital Extremes (WarFrame) and Epic Games (Gears of War). Major developers of the original Unreal include programmers Tim Sweeney and Steve Pogle, composers Alexander Brandon and Andrew "Necros" Sega, and developer Cliff Bleszinski.

Unreal Gold was one of the most successful PC first-person shooters of all time and is often categorized in the same vein as titles such as Quake and Doom for its cutting-edge graphics, fast gameplay, and level design.

It is famously also the first game ever to be released in using the Unreal Engine, which has gone on to be one of the major development tools for the video game industry. Currently in its 4th iteration, the Unreal engine has been used in hundreds of video games over the past twenty years, has received numerous awards from industry insiders, and is currently a world record holder for "most successful video game engine." by Guinness Book of World Records.

In addition to Unreal Gold being free, GOG is also offering a bundle for the entire Unreal series to players at a steep discount of 80% off.  This includes Unreal 2: The Awakening Special Edition, Unreal Tournament GOTY, and Unreal Tournament 2004 Editor's Choice Edition. The whole package can be purchased for $5.97 for the next 48 hours.

If you're looking for some other games on sale, GOG is also running a Cult Classics sale right now, with games like Aliens versus Predator Classic 2000 and The 7th Guest available at a significant discount.
