Free-to-play online strategy game Total War Arena will be shutting down in February next year.

In a news post on the game's official website, Creative Assembly staffer Joshua Williams confirmed that the game would cease live operations due to the open beta test "not [meeting] all our expectations". It sounds like Total War Arena didn't quite reach the player numbers Creative Assembly were hoping for. The development team behind Total War Arena will go on to "continue working on Total War", according to Williams, and some of the tech used in development for the game will be integrated into future Total War projects.

As a sweetener for those who played Total War Arena, Creative Assembly is offering everyone who played the game on the Wargaming Game Center platform a free piece of Total War content. If you're interested in any of the below items, there's a link to follow in the Total War Arena in-game news, or you can check out this link right here for further information. Players can choose between the following Total War-related goodies:

  • Total War: Medieval II - Definitive Edition
  • Total War: Rome II "Hannibal at the Gates" DLC
  • Total War: Attila "Age of Charlemagne" DLC
  • Total War: Warhammer "Grim and the Grave" DLC
That's not all for the apology baskets though. Wargaming, who hosted Total War Arena on its Game Center platform, is offering players 30 days of premium time in either World of TanksWorld of Warships, or World of Warplanes, with the 30 days common across all three titles. You'll need to have played 100 or more battles in Total War Arena, but that's still pretty swish. In addition, if you've got unspent Gold and/or Premium time in Total War Arena (and you've spent money in the Premium Shop), you'll be able to exchange that Gold and Premium time with any of the three games above at a 1:1 exchange rate.

Finally, for all Total War Arena Premium Shop purchases made between August 22nd, 2018 and November 22nd, 2018, you'll be able to receive an equivalent value of World of TanksWorld of Warplanes, or World of Warships in-game currency. If you want to know more about how to redeem your Wargaming benefits, head on over to this link (you'll need to sign in to your Wargaming account first).
