Toshiba announced today the launch of its first 15nm NAND chips, currently targeted at e-MMC applications.
They are currently shipping samples of the 16GB products, with 8GB, 32GB, 64GB and 128GB products to follow later at a yet-unspecified date.
As has been standard for several years now, the product package includes both the NAND itself and a controller to manage it and run error correction code as needed.
Toshiba claims the package size for the 8GB through the 64GB capacities are approximately 26% smaller than their 19nm lineup, and faster by a maximum of 8% in reads and by 20% in writes.
Mass production for the 16GB, 32GB and 64 GB products is expected to start in Q1 2015, with the 8GB and 128GB packages coming in the following quarter.
The listed operating temperature range goes from -25°C to +85°C.
The target market for these new product line is portable systems like tablets, smartphones and wearable devices, and come in both 11.5 x 13mm and 11 x 10mm base measurements to better serve the needs of each application.
Usually new process nodes have teething issues and performance too low to be included in an SSD. It is thus unlikely that these NAND chips will hit SSDs just yet, seeing as there is no mention of them in the press release, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see that happen within Q4 2015.
