Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege, the premier tactical shooter on the market today, has raised the game's price according to a news post on the official website. However, fan backlash to the price hike was severe enough to prompt a reversal from the developers over on the /r/Rainbow6 subreddit.
Originally released in late 2015, Tom Clancy's Rainbox Six Siege pits two teams of five against one another in a tactical, close quarters environment. The defending team must secure an area by erecting barricades, placing traps, and setting up strong defensive positions. The attackers similarly try to breach through these defenses using a variety of gadgets ranging from rappelling gear to explosives that can outright blow a hole in a wall.
The developers originally had removed the "Standard Edition" of the game (which was priced at $39.99) and replaced it with the Advanced Edition (priced at $59.99 - $20 higher). The Advanced Edition's primary perk is the inclusion of ten Outbreak packs, randomized loot boxes that unlock cosmetic gear for your characters in the game. It also includes 600 Rainbow Six Credits. Players who log into the game during the Outbreak event will receive four Outbreak packs immediately. The loot boxes cost 300 credits each and there's no chance of getting duplicates.
Other editions of the game (save for the budget Starter Edition) saw similar price increases, leading to quite a bit of fan furor over the hike at the /r/Rainbow6 subreddit. Consequently, Ubisoft has changed their plans to remove the Standard Edition and have enacted a number of measures to make things right with the community. To start, anyone who plays a match between now and March 6, 2018, will unlock the upcoming Ash Sidewinder skin for free. Lastly, they've promised to address player concerns about acquiring operators in the Starter Edition of Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege. That said, the price increases on the other versions of Rainbow Six Siege remain at the newly announced price of $20 higher.
