Desperados is a name that hasn’t been around for quite a while. Younger folks out there have probably never heard of it outside of a Steam sale. It’s a series of RTS games starring a small group of characters to complete missions in the merciless Wild West. The second game, the last of the saga, released in 2006. The franchise has lain dormant since then. Dormant until now, as THQ Nordic and Mimimi have announced that Desperados 3 is in the works.
Desperados 3 will have the players take once again the role of John Cooper, gunslinger extraordinaire, in his quest to track and ultimately take down his nemesis. John will not be alone in his task. Players will control a full party of characters (up to 5) with different skills and approach to conflict resolution. Judging by the trailer, there will be at least a couple of welcome returns in the roster. This includes Kate O’Hara, with her Derringer and the ability to distract enemies by seducing them, and Doc McCoy and his trusted sniper rifle. There’s also a mysterious character holding a black cat and hints at mind control abilities.
According to the publisher, Desperados 3 will take heavy inspiration from the original installment of the series. There will be a big focus around letting players resolve the conflicts in the game with multiple possible strategies, both lethal and non-lethal. Just like the previous games, the gang will find themselves often outnumbered so they will have to resort to their wits and personal skills in order to reach victory.
It will be interesting to see how Desperados 3 ends up playing. After all, this new chapter comes from folks outside of original developer Spellbound Entertainment. We’ll see how Mimimi Entertainment, developers of Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun, will make of this old (but never forgotten) IP.
Desperados 3 will be released on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2019.
