Starting April 4th, players will be able to download 2016's The Witness free from the Epic Games Store. Developed by Jonathan Blow and Thekla Inc., The Witness is a first-person puzzle game in which players wake up alone, without any memory, on an island filled with strange and challenging puzzles. There are over 500 puzzles for players to solve as they work to piece together their memory and find a way home.

You can watch the trailer for the game above. The Witness received generally positive reviews at launch, with particular praise for its clever puzzle design and beautiful environments. TechRaptor's Robert Grosso reviewed the game back in 2016 and gave it an 8 out 10, writing that "the experience, the journey and personal achievement of figuring out the method to the madness, the burning desire to continue forward and challenge oneself and their own point of view, made The Witness one of the most enthralling experiences in a long time for me."

You can download The Witness for free from April 4th through April 18th. In the meantime, you can also download supernatural thriller Oxenfree until April 4th. Both games are a part of the Epic Games Store's program that provides a new free game every two weeks. Previous free games have included Super Meat Boy, Thimbleweed Park, and Subnautica. This latest free game seems to continue the trend of Epic offering indie hits that you might have missed out on during their initial release.

Disclosure: Epic Games works with TechRaptor for affiliate partnership and TechRaptor earns a small commission off purchases made from links in this article.

Have you played The Witness? Do you plan on picking up The Witness free? Or is Oxenfree more your jam? And what do you think the Epic Games Store's free selection so far? Let us know in the comments below.
