The Last Guardian, the long-awaited action-adventure game by SIE Japan Studio and Sony Interactive Entertainment, has seen its price reduced to $39.99 as reported by PlayStation Lifestyle.
Featuring a combination of third-person action and puzzle solving, The Last Guardian a spiritual successor of sorts to Team Ico's Ico and SCE Japan Studio's Shadow of the Colossus. It was originally announced as a PlayStation 3 Exclusive at E3 2009 and disappeared from the public consciousness for some time; prior to its announcement as a PlayStation 4 title, one of the last times the game was seen in the press was as a vertical slice shown to press in 2011. The release date was originally slated for Holiday 2011, but those plans were eventually canned and the game entered a hibernation of sorts.
Eurogamer had an opportunity to sit down with the game's director Fumito Ueda and he discussed the development of the game to a degree. While Eurogamer asked if the AI was one of the issues leading to the delay, Ueda simply stated that it was a tricky proposition. Although he left Sony in 2011, the game was nonetheless able to finish production nearly a decade later.
The Last Guardian was released less than two months ago in early December 2016 for the standard retail price of $59.99. Unfortunately, despite the initial hype for the game it failed to chart in the December Top 10 in America. It reached 7th place in sales in the UK and 4th place in Japan for the last month of 2016. While Sony has not yet released sales figures for the title, the middling sales positions for the title are presumably the likely culprit for the price drop to $39.99.
