Humble Intergalactic Bundle

Humble Bundle is back at it again with The Humble Intergalactic Bundle, a collection of games for spacefaring fans of all stripes.

Opening up the bundle is an offer to get Galactic Civilizations I: Ultimate Edition completely for free simply by entering your e-mail address at the bottom of the page.  Galactic Civilizations (sometimes called GalCiv) is a turn-based strategy game originally released by Stardock in 2003. It boasts a solid 83 on Metacritic, and if you even remotely like 4X/turn-based games you'd be silly not to pick it up.

The $1 tier has some solid goodies in it:

  • Space Hulk Ascension by Full Control Studios is a turn-based tactical video game featuring a squad of Space Marine Terminators battling against Tyranid Genestealers on a titular Space Hulk. It features 103 missions spread across 3 campaign chapters.
  • Sins of a Solar Empire: Trinity by Ironclad Games & Stardock Entertainment is a 4X/RTS hybrid (branded as "RT4X") where players build their empire from the ground up on randomized maps that can feature anywhere from a handful to dozens of planets.
  • Galactic Civilizations II: Ultimate Edition by Stardock Entertainment is the first sequel in the series. It features ten different civilizations and the ability to customize your ships to a degree, a feature that the previous game was criticized for lacking.
The Beat the Average tier (currently at around $7.25) features a pair of neat titles:
  • Planetary Annihilation: TITANS by Uber Entertainment includes the base game as well as the Titans expansion pack. It's a real-time strategy game with the interesting twist of taking place on spherical planets where you can be attacked from any side - and more complex games can feature multiple planets.
  • Rebel Galaxy by Double Damage Games is a game where you pilot your very own spaceship throughout a randomized galaxy, undertaking trade missions and engaging in combat in a sort of 2-D plane that shares some similarities to Assassin's Creed's naval battles. You can find out more about the game in our review.
Finally, the $15 tier or more tier has the following:
  • Galactic Civilizations III by Stardock Entertainment is the latest game in the series (released in mid-2015) and was generally well-received. Although our review of the game had its fair share of criticisms, the reviewer enjoyed it more than not and sunk 70 hours into the title. It's sure to offer a lot of replayability!
  • Offworld Trading Company by Mohawk Games & Stardock Entertainment is exactly what it says on the tin. Mars has been colonized, and with a new planet comes new business ventures. You'll create your own trading company and try to edge out the competition in this game set in the futuristic world of interplanetary trading.
The Humble Intergalactic Bundle offers up a great set of deals for sci-fi fans, RTS fans, and 4X fans alike with an outlier or two outside of these turn-based strategic genres. If you enjoy any of these things, The Humble Intergalactic Bundle packs a lot of value in a small package. All of the titles are playable on PC, and a handful are available on Mac & Linux. You have a bit over 12 days remaining to pick it up.

Quick Take

I can't speak for the Galactic Civilizations games as I've never played them, but I have really enjoyed a couple of titles in here. Sins of a Solar Empire makes for a really interesting mix of RTS and 4X and probably would serve well as a gentle way to introduce yourself to the features generally included in a 4X sort of game. Out of everything here, though, Rebel Galaxy is by far my favorite. My review of the game rated it very highly, and I think it makes for a great single-player experience in a neat campaign that can be played in 20-50 hours (depending on how long you want to take).
