The Culling: Origins marks the reinvention of The Culling, a Battle Royale (BR) title that has had a tumultuous history to say the least. To put it bluntly, almost every decision that Xaviant Games could possibly do to mismanage a game was made, so in order to try to right the ship they went back to the beginning, especially after the complete failure of sequel The Culling 2.

Later today, The Culling: Origins will be released at 12 PM EST, will be free-to-play with cosmetic microtransactions such as clothing, weapon skins, taunts, victory celebrations, and culling cards.

Here is a statement explaining Xaviant Games' reasoning for the relaunch:

Two months ago, our studio felt like we’d crashed into the rocks. We were stuck and there was no clear path forward. We had to take a moment, take a breath, and think about how we’d steered our ship into such a predicament.

After some real, serious soul-searching, we realized that there was no clear path forward unless we went back to right some wrongs in our past. The Culling is the game that put us on the map and presented us with some amazing opportunities. But you, the community, are the people who made that opportunity real. Somehow we lost sight of that, and we lost our way when we let you down.

When we decided to return to our origins by returning to The Culling, we knew it was the right thing to do. We didn’t know if that choice would keep our studio alive, and to be honest, we still don’t know for sure. What we do know is that there was a tremendous outpouring of hope and support from the game’s most hardcore fans and from the community at large.

For those who bought the title originally, they will be entitled to an "Original Gangster" pack, which includes full "O.G." outfits, and other cosmetic items that are meant to reflect the highest price that was charged for The Culling. Even statistics for players who played after the Big House update will be available, along with progress and unlocks.

The Xbox One will be receiving this update eventually as well, although a date has not been specified. Custom matches will be able to be created on PC, and players can expect "... lots of ideas for the future..." which include bug fixes and optimization, balancing based upon community feedback, improved custom match support, new perks and airdrops, limited-time game modes and a player reporting system.
