The cavalry’s here and it finally has a name – the London Spitfire will be representing Britain’s biggest city in the Overwatch League according to the league’s official website.

The London Spitfire are named after what is perhaps one of the most iconic aircraft of World War 2: the Supermarine Spitfire. Over 20,000 of this beloved airframe were produced in around a decade. The team has taken on this name to represent the spirit of bravery under fire that was shown by Royal Air Force pilots during the Battle of Britain (and many other conflicts) in the war. The plane also makes an appearance on the team’s logo.

Cloud 9 is the professional esports organization that owns the Spitfire and will be sending its members to play for the Spitfire. The team is not only represented by a British plane; the team’s custom skin will be worn by formed Royal Air Force pilot Lena “Tracer” Oxton. Tracer eventually joined the Overwatch organization as a test pilot for experimental aircraft. One of the tests resulted in an accident which shunted her out of the normal space-time continuum and forces her to wear a special vest that keeps her anchored to the proper time and place.

Overwatch League London Spitfire Tracer

In a surprise to absolutely no one, Britain’s professional Overwatch League team is represented by the game’s only character from Britain. Tracer is looking neat in the team’s colors of cyan and orange with darker blue accents peppered throughout the skin.

The London Spitfire is the first (and currently only) team headquartered in Europe for Blizzard Entertainment’s Overwatch pro league. The Overwatch League kicks off its preseason on December 6, 2017, with the first season to follow on January 10, 2018.

What do you think of the London Spitfire? Which European city do you hope will get a league in the next round of teams to be added to the competitive environment? Let us know in the comments below!
