Tekken recently made its place in history after Japan Guinness World Records office certified two records for the long-running 3D fighting game series.

4Gamer reports Tekken Producer Katsuhiro Harada recently received Guinness World Records’ certificate for “the longest continuing 3D battle fighting video game series” (21 years and 179 days) and “the story of the longest continuing video game” (20 years and 99 days). Guinness World Records 2018 was released today.

In retrospect, Tekken debuted in arcades back in December 1994. Each main entry of Tekken steadily progressed the story, with the tale revolving around the fictional Mishima clan and the Mishima Zaibatsu, a corporation that would often host a tournament to determine the strongest fighter alive. The original arcade version only had eight characters, with the story focusing on the feud between Heihachi and his cursed son Kazuya; The latest game in the series, Tekken 7, which launched on June 2 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, has a base roster of 39 characters and concluded the dad-son feud, ending with teasing Heihachi’s cursed son Jin Kazama continuing the battle.

Tekken’s legacy will likely continue on. At present, Tekken still remains relevant in the world of eSports. Tekken 7’s developers are also continuing to improve the game via free updates and paid DLC content. Tekken 7 received its first paid DLC pack yesterday, which adds plenty of costumes and a bowling game mode. The next batch of paid DLC is scheduled for Winter 2017, which adds SNK’s Howard Geese and a new stage dedicated to the fighter; and another guest fighter will be added come Spring 2018.

As of August, Tekken 7 has sold 1.66 million units worldwide. Publisher Bandai Namco forecasts Tekken 7 to sell 2.1 million units by the end of the year. TechRaptor's Alex Santa Maria reviewed Tekken 7 when it came out, and gave it a 9 if you want to learn more about the latest entry in the series.

If you want to catch up on the story before that however, especially given its record holding length, you should take a look at the two retro 8-bit videos that publisher Bandai Namco released in the lead up to Tekken 7 that recapped the long running saga.
