eSports organization Team Liquid has announced that they've started up a new eSports team for the recently released grand strategy game Sid Meier's Civilization VI, led by Stephen Takowsky, who you might know as MrGameTheory.

The foundations of Team Liquid are built on strategy games. My Team Liquid co-CEO, Victor "Nazgul" Goossens, began his competitive career with StarCraft, and he transformed Team Liquid into the most popular StarCraft website on the internet. While Victor was shaping the competitive StarCraft scene, and before I began competing in League of Legends, I was polishing my competitive bearings with the Civilization franchise. It was through competing in Civilization IV at the highest level that I found the confidence to jump into the world of esports and leave behind my job in the world of finance.
Takowsky seems to be great fit for Team Liquid's new team, seeing as he's managed to achieve the highest rank on the Civilization Revolution leaderboards and at one point reached the highest rank on  since he's managed to become the #1 player on the Civilization Revolution leaderboard and Civilization IV international league, as well as winning Civilization V international league. He also holds the record for most 1v2, 1v3, 1v4 and, as if that wasn't impressive enough, 1v5 ladder victories in Civilization V. These achievements have made Takowsky one of the most famous Civilization players active right now, and Team Liquid's team will surely benefit from his expertise.
It is an honor to be chosen to lead Team Liquid's Civilization team. Participating in the competitive Civilization community with Steve Arhancet has been one of the great joys of my life. After we won our first Civilization Championship Cup back in 2007, with a team so small that we could barely participate in two-thirds of the events, I learned that a dedicated group of friends can accomplish the seemingly impossible. Civilization remains the most complicated game in the world, and I am thankful to be part of an organization capable of taking on the challenge.
While the Civilization franchise isn't known for its high-octane gameplay, the series has always been centered around long-term strategy instead of a high APM. Team Liquid is planning on launching a Civilization VI tournament soon, which they hope will help to revitalize the Civplayers and Civfanatic communities.

Sid Meier's Civilization VI came out last Friday and has since managed to reach 3rd place on the Steam Chart for most concurrent players.

Quick Take

I think very little people outside of the competitive Civilization community saw this one coming, but I'm very interested to see Civilization VI being played by pros at a big tournament. The game requires a completely different set of skills when compared to some of the other prominent eSports games, and I'm excited to see Team Liquid take a crack at it.

I've been playing games since I was just barely able to walk so I might as well write about them.
