The Surge, an action-RPG in the same vein as the Souls series, has been given a release date of May 2017; the actual day has yet to be announced. Developed by Deck 13 Interactive, the team that co-developed Lords of the Fallen, The Surge sees players take the role of Warren, a work who has been augmented by an exo-suit. It’s set in a dystopian world where robots go haywire and Warren, of course, has to save the day.

The Surge takes place in the bowels of the company CREO. They are the ones responsible for creating the exo-suit and the various robots. As neat as the exo-suit is, it’s not exactly made for combat, but throughout the game players get the opportunity to tweak the suit’s offerings. They also make use of the various tools Warren would have been using in his day job as weapons for the many enemies he’ll run across.

The setting is definitely a playground worth messing around in and should offer some cool fights against mechs, robots, and people alike. The Surge is best described as what is becoming known as a Soulslike. The combat is deliberate and not just wildly swinging away to get your way through enemies.

The Surge‘s combat has a bit of a twist on it, though. As you see in the video below, it’s not just about what weapon you use, how you swing it, or your movement, there’s also what part of whatever you’re fighting you choose to target. You can damage certain limbs and other apparatus on an enemy to disable them in some fashion and knowing what to target to make your time a bit easier will be a big part of your planning when approaching a given enemy.

The Surge releases on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in May 2017.
