The Surface Pro 3 was released last year and caught the appreciative eye of the tech world as an excellent tablet/laptop alternative, although the high price tag was a definite cliff that many refused to scale, which may soon change with the announcement of the Surface 3. While the Surface Pro 3 was specifically for the ‘core’ crowd, usually those who would be gaming and using intense software such as Photoshop, the Surface 3 is an option targeted towards a different market entirely.
The Surface 3 comes in two options: the aforementioned $499.99 version, with 64GB of memory and 2GB of RAM, or the $599.99 version, with 128GB of memory and 4GB of RAM.
In a move meant to appeal to the student and office crowd, a 1 year subscription to Office 365 is bundled with the Surface 3, which has a 10.8 inch screen and a 3:2 aspect ratio so that it works well as a regular tablet, if one so desires.
Although the pen came with the Surface Pro 3, the Surface 3 will not have the pen accessory bundled in with it. Adding to the cost, the keyboard is also a separate purchase, although the idea of being able to charge the Surface 3 with a Micro USB is an intriguing prospect.

The major differences is that the Surface 3 is slightly smaller than the Surface Pro 3, along with the performance increase if one were to choose a Surface Pro 3. Microsoft is definitely catering to separate markets with the announcement of the Surface 3, and in the coming months it will be interesting to see the reaction from Apple, whose iPad line may find itself under fire as the Surface 3 enters the fray.
