During the Super Mario Maker 2 Direct today, we found out that players will have plenty of options to interact online in the upcoming stage builder.

First up is a versus mode. Up to four different players get to race in "a randomly selected course." The goal is to get to the end of the race first, which will allow players to increase in rank. Rank is determined according to a win/loss ratio, so the more you win, the better you do. Ranks are determined with a letter grade such as "D" and "C."

If playing hardball isn't your thing, then there's always multiplayer co-op. Players work together to conquer a course in this mode. To win, it only requires one player out of a group of up to four to make it to the end. Players don't receive a rating in this mode like in multiplayer versus. There is a leaderboard that track's everyone's process.

If you and up to three other people are in room together, a local group can be made so everyone can tackle courses together. This requires Nintendo Switch Online, but only the host needs to have the service.

Note that you can only access the modes if you are subscribed to Nintendo Switch Online. A bundle with Nintendo Switch Online (personal for 12 months) and Super Mario Maker 2 will be available for purchase for $69.99.

Quick Take

These new modes are my favorite upcoming features for Super Mario Maker 2. I am terrible at stage creation so you can guess that I'm not interest in making my own stages. I do like to see what people create, and I am a pretty big fan of platformers, so maybe I'll give Super Mario Maker 2 a whirl and rise up in the ranks online.

Are you going to play any of these modes? Which one is your favorite? Let us know in the comments below!
