Super Mario Maker 2 Nintendo Treehouse Stream Demos Co-op Mode

We have done plenty of coverage on Super Mario Maker 2, with the release date first announced back in April, then the Super Mario Maker 2 Direct last month, announcing the multiplayer modes, a roundup of all the cool new features, and some secrets from the Japanese Nintendo page. While we didn't see much of it during the Nintendo Direct at E3 2019 on Tuesday, we got to see it on the Nintendo Treehouse: Live streams that followed. You can see Part 3 of the stream (or if you prefer their third Treehouse stream of Super Mario Maker 2) below, or read on for our rundown.

Game Producer Takashi Tezuka announced that with the help of a post-launch update, players will be able to play with their friends online. So while you won't be able to enjoy the co-op mode with friends right from the get-go upon release on June 28, you should expect the post-launch update to drop at some point. You will be able to play online co-op with random players at launch though.

The demo starts with an overview of the new stage environments you can have. The Nintendo team set up a snow world like in Super Mario World, and highlighted some of the differences with the environment. In snow mode, your character slides on everything and therefore you can build more momentum as you slide down slopes. Switching to night mode, it gets even more slippery. And if you move to the sky theme, your character can jump like it's in low gravity.

When the team had finished building the level, they went through playing it at the end of the demo. They set up a different win condition for this particular level, as there are many options, and Super Mario Maker 2 picks up on your choices to auto-populate a list of possible win conditions. For instance, if you have a Meowser in your level, you get to select beating him as a win condition requirement. It's an intuitive system that will help players explore the options better.

The demo ended with a four-play co-op run. You can play as Mario, Luigi, Toad, or Toadette. You can bounce off of your friends' characters' heads and get in their way, even if you're not playing competitively. Overall, it just looks like a fun co-op party game that both old and new fans of Mario are sure to enjoy.
