When Super Mario Maker 2 was revealed last February during the 2/13 Nintendo Direct, we knew that this highly anticipated level creator would launch in June. A recent Amazon leak alleged that the game would release on June 12, 2019. Now, we have a definitive release date: Super Mario Maker 2 launches for the Nintendo Switch on June 28, 2019.

To clarify any misconceptions, Super Mario Maker 2 is not simply a port of the original game onto the Switch. As the name implies, this title is a brand new sequel to the Wii U and 3DS title, Super Mario Maker. Many skipped the previous game because of the Wii U’s less-than-stellar sales, but this game should bring the full experience of the previous title – and more – to your Switch.

Super Mario Maker 2 allows players to create their very own Super Mario levels from various eras. Players can change the visuals of the game to look like Super Mario World, the New Super Mario Bros. U, and more. Enemies, obstacles, and items from all eras are at your disposal. Stages can also be shared with the online community.

Super Mario Maker 2 also has plenty of new inclusions. The ability to choose from different characters, such as Luigi and Toadette, are available. One new power-up, which is featured on the game’s box art and announcement trailer, is the ability to use the cat costume. This gives a character the ability to climb certain walls, for example. You can check out some official gameplay in the trailer below:

The original game was supported beyond launch, so you can probably expect additional content after this title’s release. You can play Super Mario Maker 2 on June 28, 2019.

Quick Thoughts

I’m not the most creative person. I am terrible at game modes such as Forge in Halo or, as a more recent example, Wargroove’s map and campaign editors. I do, however, enjoy seeing other people’s wild creations. Super Mario Maker is known for the insane challenges players create, so if anything, I’m looking forward to seeing what players can do this time.

I love to write, and I love to game. So, I've combined those two hobbies into one! Some of my favorite games include Fire Emblem, Halo, The Elder Scrolls, and World of Warcraft. Sometimes I like to read the occasional fantasy novel, too!
