Developer Terry Cavanagh, best known for creating challenging games like Super Hexagon and VVVVVV, released a new project to close out 2016. On his blog, Cavanagh briefly discusses the new game, Tiny Heist, and its development.
Essentially, Tiny Heist is a rogue-like stealth game where your character is working his way through levels of a tower, trying to snag gems and avoid guards and cameras. Like most of Cavanagh’s games, Tiny Heist has a minimal color palette and chunky graphics reminiscent of early DOS games. Cavanagh has made Tiny Heist available via his own site for Windows, Mac, and even as an in-browser Flash game. Cavanagh mentions that this is probably his final game to be released in Flash since HTML 5 is eclipsing it as a game platform. He also states that he isn’t completely satisfied with a few aspects of it, like the enemy designs, level generation, and timing. After a few quick rounds of the free downloaded version, those issues are not blatantly apparent.
Tiny Heist was started as a “seven day roguelike” project in 2015, experienced some feature creep, and got set aside until last December when Cavanagh refocused the game and committed to completing it before the end of 2016. It is notable that he mentions taking time off of his current, “big secret project” in order to complete Tiny Heist. With his history of churning out jam games and programming tools, it is hard to speculate about what he could be working on. Cavanagh hasn’t had a large-scale game release since Super Hexagon came out in 2012. Not that his other projects aren’t worthwhile in their own right, particularly his Bosca Ceoil music creation tool that had a big update last year.
