The Suikoden saga is one of those series that left a deep mark in the fans of the JRPG genre. The first title came out in 1995 and its success was enough to spawn many sequels, spinoffs and, more importantly, a really passionate fan community. The Suikoden Revival Movement is one of said community and in the past years invested a lot of effort in convincing Konami to not leave the series behind but instead push the saga forward. Their latest effort is a campaign that goes by the name of #SuikodenOnSteam and will launch June 3rd.
The campaign itself has the purpose of encouraging Konami to make a PC port of Suikoden and Suikoden 2 by showing that the game, despite their age, still have a huge following. They plan to do that bombarding social media feeds with messages containing the #SuikodenOnSteam hashtag. Despite Steam being the main target of the campaign, the movement does not exclude other retailers. For example, on GOG you can vote for games that you’d like to see on the platform and the first two Suikoden titles are present.
The first two chapters of the series actually had a PC release in the past but only in China, South Korea and Japan (and only in China in the case of Suikoden 2). This means that the first step has already been made time ago, and the Revival Movement hopes that this campaign may give Konami the nudge they need to go the extra mile by bringing the series to the western PC market and maybe, who knows, even in a remastered version.
Suikoden II is my all time favourite video game. I used to play it at least once a year until my PlayStation broke down and I really miss it. Considering that recently more and more Japanese games are getting a western localization, it’s not crazy to hope that Suikoden will see the PC market. A campaign like this, if successful, may show Konami (and maybe other publishers as well) that PC is not a market to underestimate.
