Styx: Master of Shadows had a reasonable reception among critics and gamers, which was at least enough to justify a sequel. The goblin assassin returns in Styx: Shards of Darkness, updated to a whole new Unreal 4 engine look, with some new areas to explore as well. With a bigger budget, developer Cyanide promises bigger ideas too. Having been in development for six months, Shards of Darkness plans to release on PS4, Xbox One, and PC next year.

Where Master of Shadows was more about learning about Styx the character, Shards of Darkness promises to let players get a greater sense of the setting. Shards of Darkness also promises a more complex and engaging narrative, which will allow players to explore the world of Styx.

Following the events of the first game, Shards of Darkness begins with an “extraordinary matter” that has forced Styx away from his hiding to infiltrate Körangar, the city of the Dark Elves. A diplomatic summit taking place in the city allows an easy cover to let Styx inside the supposed impregnable city. Upping the stakes to the story, Elves and Dwarves have joined forces, which may be concerning for Styx as the only thing they have in common is their hatred of the Goblins.

New areas and a new story are not all that Shards of Darkness promises either, as it should bring with it new enemies, and, most importantly, some new mechanics. So far they have shared a few—grappling around corners, climbing ropes, and his knife will have the ability to be used as a zip-wire—promising to offer, “unparalleled freedom of movement, along with refined stealth and assassination mechanics …”

If you’re interested in the game, you may want to know that the original, Master of Shadows, is currently on sale on Steam until the 16th for 66% off.

What do you all think of Styx? Are you excited to see more of the goblin assassin? What would you like to see in Shards of Darkness? What do you not want to see?
