The Strong Museum is one of the largest history museums in the United States of America and is dedicated to historical materials related to play. They are home to the International Center for the History of Electronic Games, the National Toy Hall of Fame and the World Video Game Hall of Fame. Located in Rochester, New York the museum houses an array of exhibits about play and video games including the World Video Game Hall of Fame which is on permanent display.

Announced on May 4th this year's inductees were nominated by the public and final selections were made with the “advice of journalists, scholars, and other individuals familiar with the history of video games and their role in society”, according to the museum’s statement. Nominees can be from any genre or platform of electronic gaming and those selected for the hall of fame are considered to “have enjoyed popularity over a sustained period and have exerted influence on the video game industry or on popular culture and society in general”.

Among the hall of famers are foundational classics such as Pong, Pac-Man, and Tetris as well as iconic favorites like Sonic the Hedgehog, The Legend of Zelda and The Oregon Trail. This year Donkey Kong, Halo: Combat Evolved, Pokémon Red and Green, and Street Fighter II join their ranks. Most gamers will be familiar with all of these titles because the mark they’ve left on the gaming industry is undeniable and their gameplay has, largely, stood the test of time. Aside from the numerous sequels and spinoffs they’ve inspired these games are still being played today.

Check out all of the World Video Game Hall of Fame’s nominee's for 2017 and the inductees of 2016. You can nominate a title you think deserves to be recognized for its contribution to gaming history for the 2018 selection.
