Steam has released a "Best of 2018 So Far" list, compiling the best-selling and most-played games of the year up to June.

It's worth noting that we're only a little over halfway through the year, and this list is likely to change by the end of 2018. That said, some of these games have done phenomenally well, so it's not a stretch to expect them in year-end lists too.

The digital distribution platform's list is divided into 4 categories: Top Sellers, Top New Releases, Top Selling VR Games and Most Played. From the top, that's the best-selling games so far in terms of revenue, each month's best-performing new releases (again in terms of revenue), best-selling VR titles and games with the most concurrent players. Quick note: Steam doesn't actually release exact numbers in terms of revenue, but we already know how ridiculously popular some of these games are, so we can extrapolate at least a little from that. It's also worth noting that some of the year's most popular games, like Fortnite, aren't available via Steam, so the lists won't include those.

On the Top Sellers list, there's a few surprises and some old favorites. The list is sub-divided into Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze, depending on revenue tier. Revenue, as opposed to flat sales, also includes microtransactions and DLC, which accounts for the presence of Valve's MOBA DOTA 2 on the list (it's free-to-play). Also in the Platinum tier is perennial favorite Grand Theft Auto V, as well as PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (no surprise there) and Jurassic World: Evolution. Perhaps a more surprising spot would be MMORPG Black Desert Online in the Gold tier, or 2015's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which still appears to be doing pretty well for itself.

Over in the Top New Releases category, we can see the games with the highest revenue totals for each month, and things get a little more interesting. January, for example, gives us emotional rollercoaster platformer Celeste and underwater survival game Subnautica, but also Early Access sim Staxel and, erm, Early Access sim My Time At Portia. Dontnod's Vampyr isn't a shocking presence for June, and in a weird way, nor is Bus Simulator 18, but demolition derby-'em-up Wreckfest is a pleasant surprise.

There are plenty of big hitters in the Top VR Games category, which is split into Platinum, Gold, Silver et cetera, much like the Top Sellers list. Big VR sellers include Skyrim VRFallout 4 VR and Superhot VR, as well as slightly more off-the-beaten-path titles like Budget Cuts and Job Simulator.

Finally, we have the Most Simultaneous Players category, which looks at games with the highest amount of concurrent players and thus isn't based on revenue like the other lists. That said, it does look quite similar to the Top Sellers list. PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and Grand Theft Auto V have over 100,000 simultaneous players each, while Rocket LeagueKingdom Come: Deliverance and Subnautica each enjoy over 50,000 simultaneous players.

There are plenty of other games we haven't mentioned on these lists, and they make for fascinating viewing if you've got a head for statistics. Head on over to the official Steam Best of 2018 So Far list and peruse at your leisure.
